I've been interviewing a lot of field sales professionals for roles I have open at the minute, and here's what I've learned about the best candidates. 1. Interested in their industry: They are well networked, they enjoy knowing what's happening in other companies, as well as their own. They like meeting other people in the industry. They see the benefit of Trade Events and staying on top of new product lines and brands. 2. Customer Focus: Building genuine relationships, they put customers first, and they are protective of their professional reputation with their customers. 3. Sales Hungry: They know their figures, they are keen to tell you how much sales have grown in their area since they took on their current role. They are clued in about commission/bonus and how much they're earning. They are proud of accounts they have won. Do you like small talk? Do you cringe in situations like these, or embrace the opportunity to show someone your true colors? I truly believe sales is easiest when two similar personalities come together, and those are the relationships that make this job fun. You can absolutely succeed by being a mimic, trying to be who you think the other person is looking for, but I think true success comes from being yourself and finding those that YOU can serve. When I mis-speak like in this situation it is immediately followed by a laugh and you better believe I'm referencing this interaction in any follow ups.
