We support parents, too. The U.S. Surgeon General recently released an advisory highlighting the profound stressors facing modern parents. “Parents who feel pushed to the brink deserve more than platitudes. They need tangible support.” Parents, whether they run a house or a corporation, are constantly juggling competing demands of work, self-care, and home-life. We wanted to share a couple of testimonials from parents who are benefiting from working with Galit Higgins, our certified EF coach. “Working with Galit has drastically improved my self-confidence. Her style is collaborative and non-judgmental and through our work together (we meet weekly for 30 minutes with two 15 minute check-ins) I’ve started creating specific goals and following through. I can see a clear “before and after” difference and so can my wife since I’m now completing the tasks on her lists. She asks, ‘When are you seeing Galit this week?’” Students also need EF skills. Here are some reflections from students: “I met with Galit twice a week to keep me accountable and help me stay on top of my long-term commitments. As an overwhelmed, ADHD college student, I kept procrastinating about finding a summer internship, but Galit, in her kind, friendly, and approachable way, helped me to break it down step by step and stay on task. Without her support, I would never have gotten my summer internship or applied to my study abroad program in time.” “Galit teaches me how to keep a planner and keep track of my due dates. I still sometimes turn things in late, but she never makes me feel bad and I’m definitely getting better. Also, there is less fighting with my parents about it!” Galit helps her clients identify priorities, set achievable goals, and execute a plan of action while tailoring researched-based approaches to the needs of each. An aspired childhood educator Throughout my internship, I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to teach children, which provided me with valuable hands-on experience in the field. This experience is incredibly valuable, as it allows me to apply the theories and concepts I've learned about child development in a practical setting. As an aspiring childhood educator, I understand the importance of fostering a nurturing and stimulating environment for children. I recognize that every child is unique and has their own individual needs and learning styles. With my knowledge of child development, I can tailor my teaching approach to meet the specific needs of each child, ensuring that they receive the best possible education and support. my internship experience has likely exposed me to various age groups and diverse backgrounds, which has further enhanced my understanding of the different developmental stages and challenges children may face. This exposure has also allowed me to develop communication skills, patience, and adaptability etc, which are crucial qualities for working with children effectively. In addition to my academic knowledge and internship experience, I have also gained insights into classroom management techniques, curriculum development, and assessment strategies. These skills will enables me to create engaging lesson plans, implement effective teaching strategies, and monitor the progress of each child. Education is a dynamic field, and ongoing professional development will ensure that I can provide the highest quality education and support to the children under my care. With my passion, knowledge, and practical experience, I am on a journey to making a positive impact in the lives of children as a childhood educator. my dedication to their growth, development, and well-being will undoubtedly contribute to shaping their futures in a meaningful way. #pomotechildeducation #Buildpositiveimpact #Childpsychology

MY UNIVERSITY LIFE AS A NEURODIVERGENT STUDENT: A JOURNEY OF STRUGGLES AND SELF-DISCOVERY There might be some neurodivergent students who are struggling in university studies, so I would like to share my unique experience at RMIT University in order to empower them. My years at university were in a “survival mode” because I had to meet academic expectations from my lecturers by only spending time on doing assignments all day to get higher marks. However, I was disappointed in myself for not getting good grades, which made me think that I would fail my courses and have to retake them instead of enjoying my semester breaks. This obsession with studying made me decide not to join any club activities and neglect relationships with my family. I never joined any clubs at RMIT because it might affect my studies (and I am an introvert). Moreover, I was often being rude to my family every time I went home and hung out with them due to the constant focus on academics, which made them worry about my behavior. Before taking the internship course, I requested for Leave of Absence for 3 consecutive semesters (October 2022 - September 2023) because I was afraid that I might not successfully apply for my internship positions due to my communication skills, besides the fact that my GPA was below 3.0 and I had no experiences in extracurricular activities. For any neurodivergent students reading this, I want to share this message: Your journey may not look like what you imagined, and that’s okay. Struggles, setbacks, and feelings of inadequacy are all part of the process. With the right support, self-awareness, and persistence, you can overcome the obstacles and carve out your own path to success. Your worth isn’t determined by grades or social status, but by your resilience and the effort you put into your own growth. Keep going, you’re not alone. From my experiences, I would like to offer the following solutions: ?Train students, lecturers, current and future staff about disability awareness, teamwork, effective and inclusive communication towards students who have been suffering from disability (especially the neurodivergent ones) ?Promote Anti-peer Pressure Culture ?Allow class visits of staff from Equitable Learning & Accessibility Service during Week 1-4 of each semester ?Update assignment information to meet the requirements of neurodivergent students (especially capstone research report and assignments involved with speaking skills): Rewording assessment descriptions and changing rubric structures/assessing methods ?Open access to a number of academic sources related to Psychology and Neurodivergence ?Encourage students to conduct cross-disciplinary research projects related to topics mentioned above ?Add the program of Psychology into the Minor Selection Lists of all majors P/S: Today marks International Day of People with Disabilities. With no licensing body in Pakistan, aspiring and trainee psychologists are struggling to enter the field. With minimal training and guidance from universities, many find themselves lost, unable to navigate their way, or even end up switching fields entirely. Even securing internships often requires students to pay out of their own pockets, and most of what they learn is basic history taking, with no real hands-on experience. The lack of supervision and guidance from senior professionals leaves students feeling abandoned, pushing some toward quack courses offered by unqualified individuals like Anum Gardezi. Comment with credible institutions that provide proper training and certifications in CBT and other therapeutic approaches, without charging outrageous fees like 100k for a three-day course. It's time for the psychology community in Pakistan to raise the standards and provide genuine learning opportunities for our future mental health professionals. #PsychologyInPakistan #MentalHealthTraining #CBTCertification #AffordablePsychologyCourses #MentalHealthProfessionals #PsychologyInternships #ProfessionalGrowth #TherapeuticSkills #CBTTraining #MentalHealthAwareness #PakistanMentalHealth #PsychologyStudents #MentalHealthAdvocacy

New Publication Alert! Exciting new research from Dr. Jamie Borchardt, Professor in the Department of Psychological Sciences and Associate Dean of the College of Education, and Dr. Deborah Banker, Professor in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction, on the role of emotional intelligence (EI) in career readiness! Their study, "Addressing Career-Related Social Problems Using Experiential Learning: A Pilot Study," examines how experiential learning assignments in internships can impact emotional intelligence over the course of a semester. Using the Schutte Self-Report Emotional Intelligence Test (SEEIT), they found a significant increase in EI scores among students who completed 16-week internships, showcasing the potential of internships to foster crucial career skills. This pilot study emphasizes the importance of EI in career readiness, especially in fields like psychology and child development, where emotional intelligence is critical for professional success and mitigating burnout. https://lnkd.in/gf-GDMgG #EmotionalIntelligence #ExperientialLearning #CareerReadiness #Psychology #ChildDevelopment #BurnoutPrevention #HigherEd #Internships #ResearchImpact

Graduate Faculty Spotlight: Cindy Basse What is your research focus? My current research focuses on the exploration of contextually relevant internship experiences for non-teaching, graduate early childhood students. Understanding how to create meaningful and rigorous internship experiences for non-teaching early childhood professionals will strengthen students’ effectiveness in current and future roles within their profession. I am also interested in conducting a self-study focused on the implementation of a Collaborative Online International Learning Experience (COIL) to promote global perspectives on infant and toddler care and education in ED 550, during the Winter 2025 semester. What do you like best about working with graduate students? One reason I enjoy working with graduate students is that they are practicing early childhood professionals, who are making great sacrifices to obtain an advanced degree. The true grit that I see grad students exhibit is inspiring. I had one student try to complete their final internship project in the delivery room (don’t worry, I told them to stop working on their coursework), and another person delivered meals to seniors while conducting a lesson reflection with me. I am awed with the determination graduate students show as they balance working full time, caring for their family, serving their community, and supporting our youngest learners. If you have unlimited funds and assistance, what would your dream research project be? I would explore the perspectives of early childhood graduate students’ experiences in a faculty led study abroad on their professional practice. Through an application process, early childhood graduate students would receive full scholarships to participate in the study abroad program. If you had to go back and do a completely different Ph.D., what would you choose? Child Psychology You have a Saturday in Marquette with no responsibilities. Where would people find you hanging out? Brunch at Lagniappe (a cajun restaurant), a hike at Wetmore Landing, followed by a drink at Rippling River Resort, while seated on the chairs in the river!

In Inside Higher Ed's annual Student Voice Survey with Generation Lab, students emphasized that their institutions should prioritize helping students find internships and job possibilities, as well as helping them prepare for career success through support in developing people skills and awareness of workplace expectations. Give this whole piece a read. ?? ?? STC's curriculum focuses on helping students build the critical skills needed to thrive wherever their postsecondary path takes them, including communication skills, financial literacy and budgeting, and how to search for and apply for jobs. A key part of that is ensuring they network with professionals across fields so they can build confidence in a workplace environment as they sharpen their skills. This is so important for ensuring they enter their first internship or job with experience and confidence! https://lnkd.in/gc6m7CMW
