2023 was the year of tech industry layoffs, however thanks to the ‘’AI Arms race’, 2024 could see a hiring upswing in the tech space as the skills of future grow in demand. Meta announces that they are expecting headcount to be ‘meaningfully higher than last year’. It will be interesting to see if there is a knock effect across our region… my money says yes. Most big businesses are wanting to develop their own tech or wanting to be more like a tech firm (particularly when valuations are considered). I’d be curious if tech firms or tech departments across our region are seeing similar intentions to invest back into headcount after layoffs. https://lnkd.in/gMKKSAfZ

During the Meta layoffs, a list was circulating with tips for employees. These ranged from the mundane such as updating mailing addresses, to the time-consuming tasks people often defer like using healthcare benefits. With a nudge from my coworkers, I scheduled a few preventative tests and appointments. To my surprise, I discovered I was born with a congenital heart defect and urgently needed open heart surgery. On paper, I was a perfectly healthy adult with no symptoms of cardiac issues. Yet, I had unknowingly lived my entire life with a dangerous heart condition that was within weeks of becoming fatal.?The timing was serendipitous, truly a silver lining of the layoffs. I had surgery with a team of specialists at Texas Children's Hospital, spending almost 12 hrs in the operating room and a week in the ICU. It was the most challenging, humbling, and painful experience. I'm grateful to be alive and feel more resilient than ever. I’m also lucky I had a very ‘fixable’ condition with a healthy outlook for a long life ahead of me. I debated for a long time if/how I wanted to share this. I am proud to be a "heart warrior" and hope my story can inspire others. Thank you to my anonymous #Metamates who wrote those employee tips. As an avid gym go-er and victim of stiff office chairs myself, maintaining a consistent workout schedule is absolutely vital. We’re Back?! Big Tech is hiring! After a tumultuous period of layoffs, tech companies are opening thousands of new positions, showcasing a resurgence in the job market. Amazon stands out with over 20,000 open jobs, but what’s even more fascinating is that they aren’t just employing 1.5 million people; they also have close to a million robots working alongside humans.
