No “Happy” Women’s Day While Women and Children Are Suffering. Today, as we observe Women’s Day in South Africa, let’s remember that our celebrations are hollow if we turn a blind eye to the struggles faced by women and children in our own communities. From gender-based violence to economic hardship, many are enduring unimaginable challenges. Instead of just saying “Happy Women’s Day,” let’s pledge to take action. Support local organizations working to end violence and poverty, advocate for policy changes, and stand in solidarity with those who need it most. Let’s make a difference beyond today. Our collective effort can help build a safer, more equitable South Africa for all. #WomensDay #NoHappyDay #ActNow #SupportWomen #EndViolence #SouthAfrica

EKOS FOR REDUCING ECONOMIC VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN IN MONTENEGRO ???? Economic violence against women in the family, which includes restricting access to financial resources??, coercive control over money, and threats of property seizure, has serious consequences such as financial dependence, social isolation, and increased risk of poverty and violence. Every fifth woman in Montenegro is believed to be a victim of economic violence, often unrecognized due to deeply ingrained traditional social norms that support male dominance and control over financial resources and property. The EKOS project opens the path to economic independence for women and girls♀? in Montenegro through the cultivation of medicinal and aromatic herbs in rural areas. With their own financial resources, women become less dependent on partners or family members, reducing the potential for exploitation or control. Herb cultivation?? requires relatively little land, but women are often excluded or discriminated against in inheritance and ownership. Inequality in land access exacerbates economic violence against women and leads to economic dependence on others. Therefore, legal reforms ensuring equal ownership and the establishment of education, support, and financial incentive programs are essential. By involving municipalities and local non-governmental organizations in the EKOS project, we can achieve even more! Municipalities can significantly contribute to the economic empowerment of women through various measures, such as the use of municipal land, subsidies for herb cultivation and farming, educational workshops, and the creation of networks of collaboration between local women and institutions. Non-governmental organizations provide support to victims, advocate ?? for their interests, and raise awareness about the importance of combating economic violence. It is necessary to understand what constitutes economic violence, how to recognize it, and how to prevent it. The project EKOS "Education and Economic Empowerment of Vulnerable Groups of Women and Girls in Montenegro " implemented by the Zavod KROG - Institute Circle, NVU Impuls, and NVO IKRE RO?AJE ?? in five participating cities (Nik?i?, Berane, Ro?aje, Plav, Bijelo Polje), highlights multifaceted approaches to raising awareness and improving the status of women and girls in Montenegro, with financial support by the Slovenian Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs within the framework of international development cooperation. #EKOSproject #education #womenempowerment #genderequality #EconomicViolence

My piece for Women's Agenda on what happens when we make policy with only the 'default male' in mind. I wrote about how this has played out in Sweden, Angola, and Australia, how government institutions uphold colonial and patriarchal power structures, and how we can fix this problem. In Guatemala, women face significant economic challenges: only 43% are employed, and just 34% have bank accounts. The Guatemalan nonprofit Instituto de Ense?anza para el Desarrollo (IEPADES) is tackling these issues through its “Savings for Change” initiative, which focuses on empowering women to achieve financial independence and improve their economic standing. WIth the IAF support, this initiative has engaged 850 Indigenous women, allowing them to pool resources and increase their savings by an impressive 75%. ?????? ??????????????'?? ?????????????? ???? ?? ?????????????? ???? ?????? ???????????????? ???????? ?????????? ?? ?????????? ???????????????? Born and raised in Namibia, Gys' path began with a solid educational foundation. He studied law in South Africa and practiced in the legal field before transitioning into banking, where he spent nearly a decade. His entrepreneurial spirit led him to private business brokering, but it was his role as Managing Director of Gondwana Collection Namibia, which he took on in January 2017, that would intertwine his journey with the Gondwana Care Trust. ?????? ?????????????????? ???? ?????? ???????????????? ???????? ?????????? Gys' involvement with the Gondwana Care Trust coincided with his tenure at Gondwana. He discovered an inspiring initiative led by a group of female employees, ‘Gondwana Memes’ who pooled their personal resources to support community projects. Recognising the potential for a more structured approach, the team formalised this initiative into the Trust in September 2017. This move not only provided transparency but also allowed for greater resource allocation to those in need. ?? ?????????????? ???????????? ???? ???????????? Gys attributes his passion for community service to his upbringing, where helping others was a fundamental value instilled by his parents. This ethos aligns perfectly with Gondwana's culture of giving and serving. He believes that exposure to the realities faced by disadvantaged communities inspires gratitude and a desire to serve, a lesson he aims to pass on to his children. ?????????????????? ?????????????????????? Among the many rewarding experiences Gys has had since joining the Trust, one stands out: a visit to the DRC Women Community Centre and Grow Together Kindergarten in Swakopmund, shortly after the COVID-19 pandemic. Witnessing the resilience and hope of children in a community devastated by the pandemic's economic impact was a profound moment for him. Despite the challenges, the children's smiles and positivity reinforced Gys' commitment to the Trust's mission. ???????????????????? ?????? ???????????????????? The Trust faces significant challenges, primarily the overwhelming need for support compared to available resources. Gys emphasises the importance of focusing on community impact rather than individual assistance, a principle that guides their efforts. The Trust's ability to adapt and thrive during difficult times, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, is an indication of the goodwill of the Namibian community and corporate partners who rallied to support their initiatives. ?????????????? ?????????? Gys envisions a future where the Trust's services may no longer be necessary, indicating a society where needs are met, and communities thrive independently. This dream, while ambitious, reflects his unwavering hope for Namibia and its people. Gondwana Care Trust: https://hubs.ly/Q02PkxgC0 #gondwanacaretrust
