The latest feature on what’s happening in MacArthur Park. When I see what’s going on, my mind goes to the level of investment needed to address the humanitarian crisis in our city, and the workforce we need that is trained, ready and funded to do the hard work of supporting people who are struggling. We need affordable housing ASAP, and we need a movement of organizers, case managers, social workers, healthcare professionals and more to help. From a managerial perspective, hiring, training, and funding these workers is where our attention needs to be. The Councilmember is right to criticize our police budget, when case managers are being paid $50k a year to tend to the sick and dying. (See the article in the NYT today that featured them) This crisis didn’t pop up over night. It’ll take more than isolated, time bound programs to help move these issues in the right direction. Our city budget (and the attached federal resources) are the first place to look if we want to gauge if we our prioritizing a new way, or the status quo.
What are the answers to MacArthur Park crisis, and can Councilmember Hernandez lead the way?

?? Empowering Change: A Reflection on the Homeless Resource Fair ?? Carlos Rocha, Program Manager of our Emergency Shelter Program, recently attended a powerful Homeless Resource Fair designed to connect homeless individuals with essential services and support. The event featured agencies like the City of Miami Beach Homeless Outreach Team, MBPD, Florida Health, local shelters, and more—each offering a variety of resources to help individuals transition off the streets. Here’s what Carlos had to say about his experience: "I recently attended a homeless resource fair and had a very positive experience networking with various organizations offering critical support for our clients. It was encouraging to see so many services available to address different needs, and I made valuable connections that will allow us to better serve our community." Some key takeaways from Carlos' experience: ??? Legal Support: Connected with Legal Services of Greater Miami, offering assistance with immigration issues, disability benefits, healthcare access, and support if food stamps are denied. ?? Substance Use Counseling: Spoke with New Hope, a counseling service for substance use that also helps with bus passes, employment referrals, and recreational activities—creating a pathway for clients to engage in positive, productive activities. ?? Homeless Assistance: Met with The Caring Place, a Broward County-based program providing housing, employment support, and volunteer opportunities for food drives and events in both Broward and Miami-Dade counties. ?? Education & Empowerment: The library’s Adult Learning Academy will soon offer free online and in-person courses, plus social worker appointments to help clients access essential resources. Carlos' experience highlights the incredible resources available for our community and reinforces how important it is to connect with these organizations to improve lives. By collaborating, we can empower individuals to take the next step toward a brighter future. ??
