Have a lot of pumpkins left over from halloween? According to Better Homes & Gardens, here are great ways to recycle your carved Halloween decoration. 1) Most pumpkins can be consumed by eating toasted pumpkin seeds or creating a puree from the insides. 2) Donate your pumpkin to places like zoos, animal shelters, farms or community gardens. 3) Feed the wildlife by turning your pumpkin into a bird feeder by hanging it from a tree filled with bird seed. 4) If you have a compost pile, throw that pumpkin right in. It’s Wolf Awareness Week! Today we feature female wolfdog, Little Foot, who came to Wolf Haven earlier this year to be a companion for Luca. She is seen here enjoying sunflowers donated by SCHILTER FAMILY FARM INC and embellished with scents by staff and volunteers. Wolf Haven is home to nine high-content wolfdogs, including Little Foot and Luca. While we have seen fewer gray wolves being bred and sold in the pet trade over the years (a huge success!), the market for wolfdogs is still troublingly substantial. Many purchasers of wolfdogs quickly learn that the wolf qualities of their “pet” - the high prey drive, pack sociality, disinterest in following human commands, and need to patrol and mark their territories - result in an impossible living situation. In households with animals that are hybrids, escapes and extreme destruction of property are common. Due to unsuitability in home environments, many wolfdog owners reach a crisis point and must relinquish their animals. Each of Wolf Haven’s wolfdog residents has an individual story that shares this common theme. Sadly, there are far more wolfdogs needing placement in sanctuaries than there is capacity to house them. 2024 ASPCA Hurricane Response & Relief Grants Initiative Grants are now open and RFP will close on Monday, 12/2/2024, at 5 p.m. ET or when funding runs out. The White Mountain wild horses live on nearly 400,000 acres of public and private lands and yet the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) allows for an Appropriate Management Level (AML) of just 205-300 wild horses. This population level was set in 1997 and has not been changed since. The BLM authorizes extensive summer and winter cattle and sheep grazing in the HMA and its surroundings.? Now, the agency plans to remove 586 White Mountain horses, bringing the population down to the low AML of 205 horses, leaving behind just one horse per 1,917 acres in the HMA!? What's worse, the BLM is basing the removal number on a 2022 census, conducted before the extremely harsh winter of 2023 caused heavy mortality for wildlife, including wild horses, across Wyoming. Instead, the BLM is claiming that while the winter severely affected other wildlife species, it did not result in significant mortality in the White Mountain herd.
