So much of the UK election campaign has been set against a sense of despondency about the state of public services. But what can be done to turn things around? How can we develop better public leaders and what role can universities play? The UK has long been an outlier in how we develop our public service professionals. There have been many arguments put forward for why this is the case but few have identified potential solutions. In this newly published research Karin Bottom (INLOGOV (The Institute of Local Government Studies)), Dr Russ Glennon (The Manchester Metropolitan University), Karl O'Connor (Ulster University) and me (UofG Centre for Public Policy) conducted in-depth focus groups with academics who teach public administration, academics who do research in public administration but do not teach it, and practitioners who are involved in the commissioning of training and development for public servants. I started the last of my four core courses in my PhD program tonight with Professor Marc-André Gagnon: PADM 6012 – Policy Process and Institutions. Despite the extra cold winter weather, I biked to school as usual—dedication and a warm coffee kept me going! How do policies emerge, change, and ultimately shape our society? The Policy Process and Institutions doctoral seminar explores various theoretical approaches to policy-making. Students will examine why some issues are addressed through policy-making while others are not, focusing on the complexities of policy development, design, and implementation. The seminar addresses the challenges of policy change, emphasizing the multiple actors involved and their influence on policy processes. Topics may include policy formation, agenda-setting, institutionalism, bureaucratic theories, theories of policy change, policy design and implementation, policy evaluation, advocacy and coalitions, and private policy-making. #PhDJourney #CoreCourses #PolicyStudies
