The CTV market is basically a pre-teen??? Social Changes:? CTV came into the market around 2007-2008 with Netflix and Roku but didn’t get popular until around 2016 when ~60% of consumers in the US were subscribed to a streaming service, according to Statista Increased Independence:? It wasn’t until 2022 that streaming consumption first surpassed cable TV. ?? Now, over 2,000 streaming services are available to consumers, and nearly every advertiser is looking to get involved. Behavioral Development: People started with streaming because of the quality content, flexibility and customization. ? People also like that their viewing experience is light or void of ads. On cable, the average primetime show airs 12 to 17 minutes per hour, or 20-28%. ?? On streaming, ad-based subscriptions are determined by the consumer based on how many ads they’re willing to trade for cost. Ad-tiered models still have lower ad loads, with some being as low as only 5 minutes per hour. ?? Financial Implications:? CTV is expensive…..?Just like pre-teens, they aren’t yet out on their own, and their parent/holding companies must put a lot in to help them in the next stage of life.??????? Today, the business model for streaming is about growth and usage, not revenue. With less ad load, greater expectations for original content quality, lower stickiness (aka churn) with consumers because of the flexibility, and more services coming onto the market, the headwinds are enormous. Many recent earnings reports are void of this view, but it’s essential for preparing for the next phase. Growing Up:? Revenue will become increasingly important as more ?? (especially from the financial markets) come onto streaming businesses. But streaming services need more revenue streams. Alternative methods include more/broader sponsorships —> this includes ad integrations within the actual show viewers are watching. In-Show ad experiences are here and ready! Split Screens and Dynamic Overlays provide unique opportunities for advertisers who may not have access to 15/30 spots, are loved by viewers, and earn revenue above and beyond the current ad models.
