Ahhh, something that EVERY voice artist or broadcaster deals with secretly in their mind. "Since your own voice sounds so much better in your head than it actually sounds, imagine what Morgan Freeman hears when HE speaks!" Just record, edit, and send because you are your own worst critic. Embrace YOUR sound. #videoproduction #voiceover #voiceacting #narration #elearning #contentcreators

Unless you've been living under a rock (or you don’t spend hours scrolling social media—highly possible), you know that Denzel Washington is adapting August Wilson’s works for the screen, and the latest is THE PIANO LESSON. As screenwriters, we often hear about the importance of theme in our work, but how do we bring it to life on the page? Many of us get frustrated when trying to find or force a theme into our stories. Here’s a quick trick for writing theme, using THE PIANO LESSON—a play adapted into a film that’s not just a family drama, but a masterclass on how theme drives character motivations and narrative tension. The key is figuring out how our characters’ desires and struggles reflect the larger themes we want to explore. In THE PIANO LESSON, the core conflict is legacy vs. generational wealth—and from there, the theme emerges. Boy Willie wants to sell the family’s piano to buy land, while Berniece wants to preserve the piano as a connection to their history. This generational conflict is central to the story, and it’s the emotional stakes that make the theme resonate. As a screenwriter, here's how you can use this approach to make your themes resonate with your audience: ?? Start with Conflict: Theme can manifest through conflict, just like the divide between legacy and wealth in THE PIANO LESSION. This gives the audience something to root for and against. ?? Character-Driven Themes: Let your characters’ beliefs and actions serve as the vehicles for the theme. Boy Willie’s desire for financial freedom is in direct opposition to Berniece’s commitment to her family’s history. This conflict drives the entire narrative. ?? Theme as Emotional Backbone: Don’t let your theme stay on the surface. Theme should influence how your characters interact, what they want, and what they’re willing to sacrifice to achieve their goals. If you’re a screenwriter trying to figure out how to integrate theme into your scripts, take a cue from THE PIANO LESSON: Let your characters embody the emotional weight of your theme, and use their desires to build conflict and tension. This will guarantee a gray area for your audience to reflect on their own values, sparking conversation long after they've left the theater. Hi folks, I recently joined Substack and I have just shared my first blog. It contains some early thoughts on experiencing theatre with a new-found language barrier (with a more detailed exploration of that to come), as well as thoughts on the balance of career, family, and an international move, and a few updates on what I have been working on recently. Key theatre themes include perspectives on Voyeurism and Abuse of the Upper Hand. Key life themes include using coffee and theatre to find like-minded and inspirational people. If any of that sparks your interest, please do give me a substack follow "@shakespearedramaturg" (All photo copyrights credited within the blog)

Sometimes, less is more. Of course this video is exaggerating it a bit, but it IS true: when multiple people are calling in on a live directed voice-over session, they tend to feel obliged to add some point of feedback, especially from the end client's company. Even when everybody else is completely happy. Maybe they need to legitimize their presence in that call, or maybe it's something else. Don't get me wrong, I still prefer these calls to me directing myself, which is about 90% of the time. At least this way I get to meet the people I voice stuff for, and most of their feedback actually makes sense. If not to me, then to the producer or anyone else calling in. And that kind of collaborating usually makes for a better end result. But not always, as shown below. Humour me: who else could've been calling in, following that last chap? ???? ↓↓↓ ?? Who am I? Bart Kooiman, voice-over artist from the Netherlands ?? What do I do? I provide character voices and voice-overs in Dutch and English ?? Why? Because I love bringing characters to live and producers enjoy this Dutch voice nerd's interpretation of their script ?? Want to talk?
