Junction Creek Stewardship Committee (JCSC) have launched a multi-year community action-based project aimed at mitigating stormwater pollutants in the Junction Creek watershed. They have installed LittaTrap? catch basin insert filters in publicly accessible parking lots to capture and remove stormwater contaminants effectively. During the fall of 2022, a pilot test of the LittaTrap? catch basin filters yielded outstanding results: 31 kg of garbage, sand, and debris were captured within just three weeks! This success led to the expansion of the project in 2023, with 34 catch basins fitted with insert filters across various areas of Greater Sudbury. In total, these filters successfully captured 4906 pieces of litter and a staggering 112 kg of litter and debris. Great work by everyone involved! To stabilize a dynamic riverbank and prevent erosion in a sustainable manner (e.g. without using plastics or concrete), the Provincie Noord-Holland designed a pilot using among other BESE-elements. The pilot aims to assess the optimal soil retention approach comparing three different types of materials, of which one are the BESE-elements. ??Big news! FID was recently awarded a $5 million grant from the Bureau of Reclamation's WaterSMART Drought Resiliency Project! This is one of the largest grants awarded to the District to date, and will support the development of the Hornor and Laub recharge basins. Once completed, the two new basins, totaling 115 acres, will capture and recharge up to 2,350 acre-feet of water annually to help stabilize groundwater levels, boost water security, and support FID's Sustainable Groundwater Management Act (SGMA) efforts. ???? This funding is pivotal in bringing FID closer to its goal of constructing 400 more acres of recharge basins.
