This is excellent news for the Tourism sector and by extension local businesses.?? However, there has been considerable debate on the impact that cruise tourism has on our local economy. Analysis reveals a complex narrative, as a substantial portion of passenger spending is confined to the cruise ship, encompassing food, beverages, entertainment and souvenirs, while the average spend per passenger on shore, is only US$26. I certainly look forward to seeing Tourism Trinidad Limited and Ministry of Tourism, Culture and the Arts- Trinidad and Tobago continue to use this metric for policy formulation and strategic planning, as they seek to enhance the benefits accrued to local businesses and communities. Additionally, we seek to increase tourist spending by: 1. Developing more compelling, culturally enriching experiences that encourage visitors to engage deeply with the local economy. From artisan markets to local culinary tours, the potential to redirect spending from ship to shore is vast, provided the offerings resonate with tourist preferences. 2. Ensuring that local businesses are fully equipped to facilitate and seamlessly accept digital payments is crucial, especially in the context of encouraging tourists to make indiscriminate purchases. I would say it is a critical component that can significantly improve the efficiency of transactions, making it more convenient for visitors to make purchases locally.
