Just because you don’t immediately see the direct benefit doesn’t mean it’s not making an impact. Here are some simple ideas to incorporate volunteering into your everyday life: - Set a recurring calendar reminder to donate blood - it only takes an hour a few times a year. ????? - Sign up for micro-volunteering opportunities that let you contribute in small increments, like transcribing documents, sorting and organizing donations at a local food bank or clothing drive or writing letters for seniors, or hospitalized children. ???? - Organize a neighborhood clean-up day and get friends/neighbors involved. Just an hour or two can make a big difference. ???? - Use your professional skills to provide pro bono consulting for a local non-profit. ???? Tuesday Tip: Volunteering vs. Timebanking #Volunteering is typically an unpaid role that fills an unmet, need of a nonprofit. The nonprofit defines the roles, the tasks, number of hours, duration of assignments, etc. #Timebanking is an opportunity for the individual to define the work they want to do, when they do it, how they do it, and how long they offer to do it. Moreover, they receive time currency equal to the number of hours worked, and that time currency can be used to purchase services and goods that meet their needs. If you're operating a nonprofit that needs #volunteers, consider timebanking your unpaid volunteers. It is the socially just thing to do. Myth ? “Volunteering is a waste of my time” Facts ? One of the biggest misconceptions about volunteering is that it isn't beneficial for the volunteers. However, NCVO found quite the opposite to be true. 92% of people who had given time volunteering in 2023 were satisfied with their experience, and 75% of people said that it had helped with their mental health and well-being. These stats show just how valuable volunteering can be for you, let alone the charity or organisation you are helping! ?? If volunteers support you, please ask yourself: → Do we show them enough appreciation? → Are we building a community? Donating to charity, whether it's money, time, or otherwise, is not selfless. Sure, it helps us DO good and that alone can be enough, but it also makes us FEEL good and proud. So if you don't contribute to your supporters' feel-good motivations and drivers (and I hate to be the bearer of bad news), they might leave... Next week is Volunteer Week.
