This story is about cutting workforce, but when you read more closely, it simply points out to lack of understanding of who to hire into the digitalization-first workforce. First, the article: A firm is "mostly cutting junior staff in data analytics and digital operations [...] As part of its pivot, EXL Service is hiring workers with advanced data, AI and generative-AI skills." and "Recently laid-off tech workers are now facing a harsh new reality: Jobs for those without AI skills are scarce." Some firms are in somewhat better position. Their IT workforce is leaner, so it is not about who to cut, but rather who to hire AND what training/upskilling objectives/key results set for the existing workforce, so that the willing members catch up to the level required by digital-first organization. Most importantly, the skilled programmer of yesterday needs to move on and out. The programmer of today and tomorrow is really a junior data scientist+junior data modeler+junior/senior algorithm builder+experienced R & Python & another language programmer, that's what a manager should be thinking when reading "AI and genAI" skills. And that's NOT THE END. Our biggest problem is not just the lack of appropriate technical skills, but lack of immagination of what AI fits the purpose of any commercial organization: GENERATING HIGHER PROFITS SMARTER. Without profits, there is no money for growth, R&D, and all those more expensive hires. Food for thought, ... and no AI needed to generate your thoughts, I think :) Cogito ergo sum.
