The topic for #???????????????????????????????????????????? ???????????? is "?????? ?????????? ?????? ????????..." The 100-day plan is famous on both sides of the acquisition fence: The PE firm has their blueprint, and the newly acquired portfolio company thinks they understand what is expected. There is often a big and gap between the two - an unpleasant surprise for both. Portco CEOs tell me their tales of being hit with a hurricane of required reports they've never had to prepare before. PE firms report frustrations with CEO's who begin to look like they will not perform up to expectation. One of my colleagues who was recently acquired has been stunned by the number of meetings and reports expected of him. His stress level has gone through the roof. Another portco C-suite leader found himself reporting to a replacement interim CEO suddenly brought in by the PE firm to "turn things around quickly." This interim CEO was inserted after the PE firm assured the former CEO that he was to remain with the company because they needed his industry and corporate intelligence. The new interim CEO was from outside the industry and had little operational expertise in this portco's sector. While these gaps in understanding and approach are not always the case, there appears to be a not-infrequent chasm in communication, understanding and approach between PE acquirers and portfolio leaders that calls for improvement. The "victims" of such '100-Day Disappointments' are the employees, the customers, and often the entire exit timetable. The ?????? ?????? ???????? needs to be clearly mapped out, understood, and embraced by both buyer and acquired for the relationship and the new company to succeed. #PayitForwardFriday is HERE!! Today’s trifecta of talented tycoons come from the master of the everyday mansion – Toll Brothers. Originators of the “Pick your lot, pick your plan”, their methods have been imitated and mutated – but never duplicated. Personally, I think part of their success is their integrative corporate culture.?You have to learn “development and homebuilding” – not just your job. This has dual benefits of keeping day-to-day life interesting – but also letting people get to know other departments across the company. The result is a pretty knowledgeable and happy staff – that really don’t want to go anywhere. Here in Orange County, Brad Hare leads the charge as Division President. Near as I can tell – he has only been at Toll since the Mesozoic Era.?He was a smiling, hustling, I-know-my-$$$$- PM when I was there from 2005-2008. He helped me learn a lot of the construction/development aspects I needed to understand to value land.?He also has a softball swing as sweet as that smile. It was great listening to him share his insights on the scaling Toll had to do after some recent acquisitions.?The processes and operational changes that needed to be made – while maintaining the culture that kept them strong – I basically got a free class in Master’s Level planning and leadership. Next on up on the tenure list – Jason Certilman.?Another great example of in-house grooming to feed the needs of the machine.?Jason spent his first 8 years at Toll climbing the Project Manager ladder as an APM, PM, Senior PM – you get the idea. About a year ago – he moved over to the Land Acquisitions side where he brings all of his PM knowledge to the land negotiating table.?If he hits the price of land in his proformas – like he hits (literally) the flag from off the green – when he throws out a number TAKE IT – that’s the number! Finally, the newcomer to the team.?When Toll does go outside the ranks to hire – they don’t mess around – they make a splash.?In this case, they swung for the fences when they reached out and landed Jack Rye. Jack had been making his name in the BIA Orange County Chapter land scene for a few years now – but would he be able to handle the pressure of moving up to Fortune 500 Company like Toll? But remember not to overlook showing appreciation and care for the loyal teams whose dedication constructed your empire, brick by glorious brick, over the years. Before signing on the dotted line, vet potential buyers thoroughly to confirm they share your people-first ethos that fueled prosperity. Look beyond financials to determine there’s no hidden agenda waiting to undermine your employees’ foundations post-sale. Choose a steward who will safeguard their best interests during the ownership transition as well as you have. Making an graceful exit is your last act of leadership. So ensure your loyal builders continue standing tall on the strong foundations they helped erect under your tenure. Prioritizing their welfare through the transition allows you to pass the baton with pride to a buyer who shares your sincerity for protecting those who gave their all to scale your company heights year after year. The people should remain long after you’re gone.

What a fantastic afternoon with the Queensland Leaders #Alumni yesterday, where we dove deep into “What can we expect to see in the economy and business for the rest of 2024?” ? I was joined by a great panel of experts including Mark Steinhardt from InterFinancial - Clairfield Australia, Matthew Smith from Prime Financial Group, and Lance Evans from Evans International Freight Consolidators Australia. ? We explored this theme from many angles, including mergers and acquisitions, cash flow and business sentiment, and what’s happening in the world of imports and exports. ? My main takeaways from the afternoon included: 1. As business owners, we must always have strong business fundamentals – as I like to call it running a ‘Professional Business’. This includes knowing your numbers, your pipeline, people, strategies and plans, and your point of difference in your market. Then you are always ready to take advantage of opportunities that may come along – from attracting investors, acquisitions, sales, and growth; 2. Start with the end in mind – what are you aiming for? Because this will impact how you build your business and the decisions you make along the way; and 3. Focus on what you can control and influence. There is particularly a lot of turmoil and uncertainty in the world at the moment, but we can’t control it. So, what can you control in order to steer your business forward? ? Yesterday, Crown Castle announced their new CEO. I'll admit I'm not surprised that he's a former exec at American Tower. Once Bradley Singer was put on Crown's board, I knew there were other dominoes to fall. It goes to show you how much influence Brad has already, but a fresh voice was needed at the helm of Crown. Ultimately, Steven Moskowitz is the right fit given his industry experience and you can't deny his impressive resume. American Tower grew to great lengths under the core leadership of Brad, Steven and others. What "others" will be plucked by Crown as they assemble American Tower's old dream team? I'm extremely excited to see what unfolds, but I see this as a positive for the telecom industry. What will be Steven's biggest course of action? Clearly, he's going to be involved in the potential sale of their fiber business. Given the extensive layoffs and proposed changes at Crown, I expect morale isn't in the best place. Good morale is crucial for Crown if they want to turn this ship around. Create an environment that people want to be a part of and don't cheap out on your talent.
