Last night Four Corners took a closer look on Live Nation and their influence on the Australian music industry.?I recently had a chat about the UK’s Arena Ticket Levy which was mentioned in the report. Here’s the deal: A small fee from big arena gigs goes to support grassroots music venues. Why does this matter? These small venues are the lifeblood of the music scene, giving up and coming artists a place to perform and grow their fan base and they are closing at a rapid rate. Without these spaces, we might miss out on the next big thing in music. The levy helps keep these venues alive, ensuring there’s always a stage for new talent to shine. It’s like paying it forward - today’s arena headliners supporting tomorrow’s stars ?? The team at ALMBC are currently pushing this to be implemented in Australia and it is gaining momentum with national media getting behind it. So next time you’re at an arena show, remember- that a little extra $’S on your ticket could be helping to keep the music scene thriving from the ground up in Australia ???? #ausmusicscene?#supportlocalvenues?#arenaticketlevy

Exciting times ahead for #Afrobeats and ultimately multiple genres of African music as Universal Music Group makes a strategic bet on Mavin Records ?? ??. Best of all, by keeping the brilliant minds and business savvy of Don Jazzy and Tega Oghenejobo at the helm, the deal rewards and recognizes local leadership and the unique entrepreneurial talent and spirit that catapulted Mavin to success. Cracking good read here with enough to make you ponder about market dynamics in any industry
Something happened at Auckland's best venue six months ago, and Live Nation hasn't had a show at the Powerstation since. This story is based on conversations with a bunch of people around the live music scene, along with an on-record interview with the venue's owner. Live Nation missed multiple deadlines to respond. It doesn't feel like there's any easy solve here.

In 2023, the global live music industry saw a 25 percent YOY increase in revenues, over 33 billion USD. By 2030, revenues are expected to reach close to 52 billion USD. Lack of technological development has been the downfall of so many industries, and could be the downfall of live music without the infrastructure to keep up with its growth. With the live music industry expected to double its revenues from 2022-2030, innovations must occur to support this growth. Let’s define the industry by looking at the following 3 groups: venue, artist, and fan. - Venues rely on the relationship between artists and fans, and thus revenue. - Artists rely on venues(to perform) and fans(to buy tickets), and thus revenue. - Fans rely on the relationship between venues and artists, for their entertainment. For an industry that so heavily relies on relationships and communication between each group, it lacks both. I am working alongside Javier Cadena, Robert K., and Carlos Esquivel to change this by developing the Juke app. By creating beneficial features for venues, artists, and fans, as well as a discussion space and marketplace, the live music industry will unite. With local small music venues under constant threat of closure, and orchestral musicians being sacked daily while shiny new national megadomes are being built, no one’s really talking about the musician’s experience of small venue versus large.. not to mention the massive topic of how music sounds in different spaces. Small venues are not just grassroots launch pads for bands starting out. While they do fulfill that purpose, they also provide an intimate performance and audience experience far more suited to the quieter genres of music. Having performed in megadomes around the world I can tell you it’s often pretty soulless and harder to connect with the audience. Not every musician wants, or needs, to be thrashing through a massive pop-rock set with strobe lightshow. Sometimes you just want to be in a space with people you can connect with to make music. Smaller spaces give the musician the chance to do just that and some of the bigger artists I tour with are now choosing smaller spaces over large. I support Music Venue Trust and Mark Davyd in their pro-active and logical approach to making venues work together to ensure that the British music industry can continue to thrive and grow and be accommodated at all levels. I’d just love people to understand it more from the performers’ perspective too! Without us, you’ve got an empty room.. #musicvenuetrust #grassroots #livemusic #wearethemu

The DOJ is suing Live Nation for its monopoly on the music industry. We’ve all watched this happening for the past few years. There’s been no competition, no diversity in the live entertainment industry. Finally, we’re saying ‘monopoly’ out loud and acknowledging what we’ve all been forced to accept. This is a precedent for things to come, not only in live music but across the wider music industry. Corporations are capturing entire corners of the market, driving prices up for consumers, and ultimately, damaging the fan experience for all. For innovation to happen, there has to be fair competition. Let’s hope this is the start of a more dynamic and innovative industry for all.
