I grew up poor and had to hustle for anything I wanted. I started creating my own jobs when I was 10 and worked 2-3 jobs throughout college. Each job taught me about different sides of humanity, myself, how to get good at new things fast and enjoy the ride. Even the lowest paid job I look back at fondly as it gave me so much more than just income. It also shaped my brain and life decisions in unexpected ways. It’s also made me feel very fortunate to have found things post college that I love doing and getting up every morning to tackle, especially when the going gets tough. A few of the most unusual jobs I did: *carnival game entrepreneur *car washer/waxer *ferry deckhand *concert security *gym front desk *preschool/afterschool teacher *pharmacy technician *grocery store manager *X Games ops *tech event photographer I love hearing about people’s nonlinear work adventures, share yours in the comments! What was the most unusual thing you have been paid for (even for one day)? What was the most surprising or valuable lesson you got from a job?

Inclusive Hiring Tip: Don't include physical requirements in your job description that aren't actually essential duties. I saw a job ad today for a grants manager that included in its working conditions very specific expectations regarding vision: "Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus." There were no essential duties that couldn't be accomplished through the use of assistive technology such as a screen reader or refreshable braille. Using a computer, reading, and writing? Yes. Close vision, depth perception, adjusting focus? No. Including rigid and irrelevant physical requirements in a job description not only potentially limits your hiring pool, it's also ableist. #AbleismAtWork #InclusiveHiring

Wish you could peek behind the curtain and find the best auto technicians NOT scrolling job boards??? Imagine snapping a candid photo of your auto shop filled with hardworking, loyal techs, each deeply engrossed in their work, while you're planning your next vacation. Sounds like a dream, huh? Ever thought, 'Why can't I find quality techs who aren’t just hopping jobs?' Yep, it feels like trying to find a needle in a haystack. But what if I told you there's a way to tap into that goldmine of hidden talent – those not hanging around job portals? Exciting, right? Well, buckle up, let's dive in. It's all about social media, but not the boring, old-school way. It’s about writing unique ads that are compelling to technicians and talk about the benefits THEY receive when they come to work for you. Think deeply about what makes your shop stand out. What do your current employees like about working for you? How do you remove obstacles and make sure your team member’s lives work inside and outside of the shop? If a tech asked you in an interview, “Why should I go through the time and trouble and take the risk to leave my current job to work for you?” Would you have a good answer? And what if you rack your brain on these questions and you draw a blank? Well, this is exactly where you need to start. Put the time and effort into building your shop culture into something that will attract the caliber of employees you want on your team. It doesn’t work the other way around. Don’t be like the man standing in front of the stove saying, “give me heat then I’ll put in the wood.” Visualize this: Your shop, buzzing with committed technicians, each having your back. Your phone's notifications? No longer job applications, but vacation deal alerts. Your business grows, profits soar, and your nights? Well, they're peaceful and restful. Ready to change the game and open yourself up to a whole new world of good candidates? Post your next job on social media and give it a boost to show it to more of the right folks. You’ll be glad you did.???? #Jobs #Staffing #Employment #StaffingAgency #Repair #Auto #Hiring #Automotive #Mechanic #Technician #TechnicianFind #AutoRepair #AutoRepairShop"

Workshop owners: here are the 2 most important things to consider when hiring for your auto repair shop ???? Too many workshop owners aren’t thinking long term when they post a job ad. Usually they’ll rush through the process because they desperately need a new technician asap. But what happens when you rush the process and realise 2 years down the track that the person you’ve hired has absolutely no leadership skills whatsoever and can’t assist you with training the new staff? Or maybe the person you’ve hired as an apprentice has no loyalty, and after you’ve spent years investing in their training, they decide to move to another shop once they’ve become qualified, leaving you to start the whole process over again with a new apprentice?? Here’s what you need to be considering, when you’re going through the hiring process: 1?? Don’t just consider the technical capabilities of the person you’re hiring; consider their personal qualities - such as values and life experience. Ask yourself, do they need to have honesty, integrity or leadership skills? 2?? How can you add value to them and their career? This person will be so much more loyal, productive and satisfied at work if they know their long term career is being thought of and worked towards. Have you ever had any bad experiences with rushing into a hire before? Let us know below what happened and what you learnt from it ??

Coming in behind Vegas, Orlando, Florida has been recognized as the most popular destination when it comes to hosting events, specifically trade shows and conventions. With 7 years of experience working in the event production space catering to corporate related events, I, Melissa Locke, have built my reputation as the go to person when it comes to referring stagehands and technicians to production and labor companies in the area. I’ve not only grown multiple companies rosters with skilled and unskilled labor over the years but have also assisted in booking labor for shows. While working on countless shows throughout my career, I have made it my life’s mission to mentor and educate as many green hands as I can by teaching them how to network, how to fill out and submit invoices(1099 contracts),teaching organizational skills like always documenting upcoming gigs and keeping track of hours worked in their calendar as well as connecting with other experts in the field especially when it comes to outside training. As much as I love freelancing and being on the show floor, I’m looking to apply my skills and expertise and merge into the role of a project or production manager and/or sales representative for rental equipment, specifically in the lighting department. In the near future, I’d like to take these new skills and open up my own business as a labor company but I know there’s a lot that I still need to learn when it comes to the business side and obtaining clients, dealing with payroll, negotiating rates with clients that include markup percentages so business owner makes a profit as well as ensuring your crew is taken care of as well. If I’ve learned anything over the years it’s these mottos/sayings: 1. “Your (production) crew keeps the client.” 2. “You’re Reputation is everything” 3. “Plan every show like it’s your last and do it with pure excellence and professionalism.” Willing to work remote or in office and I prefer an in person interview rather than zoom. Eager to land a position by November 1st, 2024. Thank you. Please send serious inquiries only to my email address below. Mel Locke [email protected]

What is your "Zone of Genius?" This is what makes you rich, a recognized expert, and an inch wide and a mile deep on a topic. You can create leverage from your Zone of Genius. Here's how I created leverage by making an agency My Amazon Guy. My Zone of Genius is teaching. So I had to hire staff to leverage this. Then taught them everything I know. Day 1: Made video content teaching what I sold Day 30: Hired an assistant Day 90: Hired a 2nd assistant Day 180: Threw a team of 5 in my basement Day 570: Team of 9 got kicked out of my house by fire-marshal, went remote By 2022 I hit 200 employees By 2023 I hit 300 By 2024 I hit 500 And I never stopped teaching. I taught students how to become teachers and increased my leverage even more. I never stopped believing I ran an education company. But I leveraged my teaching into marketing. The nice thing about running an education company is students randomly appear in the wild. Sometimes the student becomes a client, sometimes an employee. Teaching requires you to turn complicated subjects and make them easy to understand. Education created my company. Teaching is my Zone of Genius. Pic of bunny ears unrelated.
