Curing pot is something that has been kind of a mystery for most people so I will elaborate to the best of my knowledge! Things start and finish with scoping the glands. I prefer mine to finish during cure for maximum flavor and cannabinoid regulation. Industry standard for scoping is 7 amber glands at any spot viewed on the plant (time to harvest). Many growers go past this stage to get more weight but their flavor profiles and drug content suffer (poor quality). As I said, I prefer a much higher quality product so I harvest at 50 clear 50 milky. The resin glands and flavor profiles develop more in the jar than on the vine. After the bud is cut, there are two basic options. Let it dry and process or process and let it dry if your product is intended to be cured flower. I prefer to process then dry. More flavor, less dry time. I prefer to burn off the undesirable terpenoids during the first 24 hours of drying which means I use quite a bit of airflow during that time. The more product you are processing, the more airflow. After 24 hours back the airflow way down to a gentle breeze. If you monitor the smells they turn from chlorophyll to dank over the first 3 days. Any hint of “hay” smell must be dealt with immediately by blowing out the area where the cure is going bad. I use a hand held hairdryer to get those decomposing gases out of the vegative matter immediately! If this isn’t done, your whole container and all the drying herb could be ruined! The goal is to use as little airflow as possible without your product rotting (going to hay). If you are doing things right your product will be dry in 7 days. Dry by medicinal standards is 16 on a moisture meter but that is because at 16 mold cannot form. However, 16 is a bit low for cannabis or tobacco so we shoot for a tiny bit more moisture. That moisture allows the maturation of the resin glands and terpines to develop within the microcosm of your curing container. Your nose must guide you from this point forward. Since the herb is still at risk of decomposition due to its moisture content the gases must be exchanged at regular intervals until the product has stabilized in the jar (finished). Each day the container must be opened, smelled and the stale air blown out (gas exchange). As long as you are smelling wonderful smells each time you open the jar, things are progressing nicely. If there is a bad smell, there was either too much moisture present in the herb when it was put to cure or you haven’t been doing the gas exchange process thoroughly enough. If things don’t smell right, pull the herb out of the jar and give the product airflow until it stops stinking. Make sure the moisture content is correct and try curing again. The cure has stabilized when the moisture content is perfect (stem snaps when stressed). The aroma of fantastic pot should be the only thing you smell when you open that jar! When you can leave the jar shut for a week and it still smells good you have won! #cannabis #cured
Northern Lights X Lemon Skunk 8 months aging/curing. A few days ago we were discussing curing vs aging and Brian Jester made a good point. As far as I can figure cannabis resins are one of the few resins we consume. Are there others? Curing does usually go with hardening as Brian mentioned like with epoxy or similar substances though latex, rubber etc cures pliable like hash. When it comes to things we consume it's usually called aging. Meat, cheese, wine, etc. Tobacco is cured and then some aged and some not. For my own smoke I often jar it up quite damp and open and close the jars for days to get a good cure. Depending on the variety, resin can take a few weeks to several months to "cure/dry? Cannabis resins that don't dry/cure too quickly are often better. At what point does drying turn to curing which turns to controlled aging as Sven Rachinger so eloquently put it? If any step is not done right aging/curing turns drying out and degrading. #cure #aged #cannabisresearch #trichomes #northernlights #mmj #lemonskunk #resins #cannabisindustry #cannabisscience
