A terrible decision from the City of Forth Worth. Bitcoin mining has significant environmental impact including the generation of significant amounts of electronic waste (eWaste) as the electronics used to mine for bitcoin burn out much faster than their intended life expectancy. Bitcoin mining also generates substaintial amounts of greenhouse gas emissions (GHG). Mining for a single bitcoin takes as much electricity as the average American home uses in a year. More than 50% of the global energy used to mine bitcoin comes from fossil fuels. Cryptocurrency has lost over 2/3 of its valuation since 2022, and it hasn't reached the bottom yet. Mining for bitcoin is not cheap. Though the city's units were donated, they run 24/7. Online calculators estimate that each unit can generate around 50 to 80 CENTS of bitcoin "value" per day. That's assuming the units are running optimally and the S9s the city has are rumored to have poor overall performance and high fail rates. I'm sorry, City of Fort Worth, but this initiative reads like a well-meaning but poorly-researched political decision that will ultimately result in egg on the city's face.
