This is a great article in the Archinect series on AI. As we as an industry improve data accessibility and interoperability, the temptation to AI-everything would be huge - but that would be hype. There is a lot of opportunities for augmenting human skills and creativity, but there are still too many bumps on the road for an AI-driven world of AEC. Great article by Phil Bernstein (and his book just got in my list!) Daniel Hill Eric FIRMIN Holger Wolff-Hais David Seck Francisco Castilla Pérez Marcos García Escudero Leonardo Bettiolo Lukas D. I’m thrilled to share our recent publication titled “Comparative Study of a Newly Proposed Machine Learning Classification to Detect Damage Occurrence in Structures.” ????? ?? Abstract: Over the past two decades, we’ve witnessed the construction of numerous large-scale structures worldwide. These architectural marvels come with hefty price tags and lengthy construction processes. Ensuring their long-term functionality and safety is paramount. That’s where structural health monitoring (SHM) systems play a crucial role. ?? Key Challenges: Noise and Environmental Factors: Real-world structures face noise in measurements, varying environmental conditions, and diverse load types. These factors make damage identification and classification challenging. Finite Element Modeling vs. Real-World Structures: While finite element modeling has been used to test damage detection methods, applying these methods to real-world structures remains uncertain. ?? Our Approach: In our study, we focused on two benchmark structures: SMC Benchmark Bridge: An existing megastructure in the real world. IASC-ASCE Benchmark Structure: Responses collected under applied loads in a controlled laboratory environment. ?? Methodology: We leveraged the powerful XGBoost algorithm to extract essential features from sensor data. XGBoost, known for its ability to handle complex data, has recently gained attention across various fields. ?? Results: Our study delves into the identification, classification, and severity assessment of damages in these structures. By evaluating feature importance and selecting relevant features, we achieved high accuracy in damage detection. ?? Read the Full Paper: ?? Link to the Full Paper1 ?? Excited to contribute to the field of structural health monitoring! Let’s keep advancing technology and AI methods to safeguard our built environment. ???? #StructuralEngineering #MachineLearning #Research #StructuralHealthMonitoring
