Just shy of the six week countdown to the Round the Clock Rescue Run I want to share (for myself at least) an unprecedented work selfie. Yes I am holding puppies in a baby carrier, as I worked flexibly (enormous thank you to Integrion Consulting and BHP for facilitating this) to be able to foster them until they were old enough to be adopted (there was a third running around somewhere in the background too). This unprecedented moment is as a result of unprecedented challenges facing the Dogs’ Refuge Home (DRH), Shenton Park (echoed at animal refuges globally) with: - Unprecedented numbers of surrenders due to the cost of living crisis. Last Sunday the DRH had ~200 dogs in its care and it managed to find the resources to accept an additional 23 puppies from rural Western Australia. - Unprecedented numbers of domestic animals not being sterilised, with unsterilised surrenders at the DRH increasing from ~44% to ~74% in the past five years. Did you know one unsterilised female dog and her unsterilised litters over a period of 6 years can produce 67,000 unplanned puppies! - Unprecedentedly low adoption to surrender rates. The DRH is a no kill shelter and the only way they can help more dogs is through adoptions. One of its beloved residents has been in the DRH’s care for more than 900 days! - Unprecedented operating expenses (as resources are needing to be spread even more thinly), which will need to be filled by the generosity of the community. - Unprecedented (I hope, but sadly I know I might have embellished the uniqueness of this tragedy) animal mistreatment, with puppies and expectant mum’s being left in rubbish bins with no way to escape unless found by strangers or local Rangers. The DRH has responded to circumstances like this twice in the last month! These ‘unprecedented’ factors are just some of the drivers motivating the Round the Clock Rescue Run, as Willie Richards and I try and raise crucial funds for the DRH. If you’re interested in getting involved as a Running Allie or Challenge Champion, please reach out, as ultimately the more legs this challenge grows, the more paws that can be supported ?? Animal Shelters play a crucial role in our communities, providing care and hope for countless animals in need. Many are at capacity and need our help! Here are some meaningful ways you can support your local shelter: ?? **How to Support Your Local Animal Shelter** ?? 1. **Adopt, Don’t Shop**: The most impactful way to help is by adopting a pet. You give a deserving animal a loving home and free up space for another animal in need. 2. **Volunteer Your Time**: Shelters often rely on volunteers to help with daily operations. Whether it's walking dogs, cleaning, or assisting with events, your time can make a big difference. 3. **Donate Supplies**: Shelters always need supplies like food, toys, blankets, and cleaning materials. Check with your local shelter to see what they need most. 4. **Monetary Donations**: Financial contributions help shelters cover medical costs, facility maintenance, and other essential services. Even small donations can have a big impact. 5. **Foster a Pet**: If you can’t commit to adoption, consider fostering. This temporary care can provide much-needed relief to overcrowded shelters and give animals a better chance at finding a permanent home. 6. **Spread the Word**: Use your social media platforms to raise awareness about the shelter, its needs, and the animals up for adoption. The more people know, the more help they can provide. 7. **Participate in Events**: Attend and support fundraising events organized by the shelter. These events are often critical to their operations and can be a fun way to contribute. 8. **Advocate for Animal Welfare**: Get involved in local advocacy efforts to improve conditions for animals and support policies that benefit shelters and their inhabitants. Your support, in any form, can make a significant impact on the lives of shelter animals. Together, we can ensure these wonderful creatures receive the care and love they deserve. ???? #SupportLocalShelters #AnimalWelfare #AdoptDontShop #Volunteer #FosterPets #DonateToShelters #CommunitySupport

Today is National Rescue Dog Day. So what is the state of rescue today? In 2023, ~400,000 dogs & cats were killed in our nation's shelters. Including 30% more dogs than in 2022. That increase is both staggering & heartbreaking. And the shelter where I volunteer is at capacity for dogs. Thankfully there are specific things you can do to help save lives: - Adopt don't shop. This is the #1 thing you can do. When you buy from a breeder you perpetuate the cycle that animals are commodities & directly increase the number of animals who end up in shelters (and yes, even expensive breeds end up in shelters). - Spay or neuter your pets. This is the #2 thing you can do. If you're adopting your pet from a rescue or shelter, then you'll be good, since most, if not all, won't adopt out an intact animal. Plus, it's healthier for animals to be fixed ?? It's a win-win-win! - Get involved. You can adopt, foster, volunteer, donate, and/or educate others about the issues. Everyone can do something to directly help the animals. Just pick the best fit for your lifestyle! For me, it's volunteering every week at the local shelter. In 2016, 1 million dogs & cats were killed in our nation's shelters, so overall, we've made tremendous progress. Together we can save more lives. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask! [Photo from Best Friends Animal Society.] #adoptdontshop #shelterpets #animalwelfare #animalrescue #SaveThemAll #NationalRescueDogDay

Last week, I attended a donation party where we jointly made our year-end donations and celebrated the collective impact. Some surprising take-aways for me: ?? A shared focus on farmed animal welfare:?Nearly everyone was donating to causes supporting farmed animal welfare. Why? Because there are currently 31 billion land animals in factory farms, yet only 2% of charitable donations go toward their welfare (https://lnkd.in/evJC8GxQ). ?? Go "all-in" on one cause: Unlike investments, where diversification is key to reducing personal risk, donations are a collective effort. By going "all-in" on one cause, you help shift global donations in that direction. The hedging is done implicitly by others choosing to support their causes. ?? Embrace emotions: We're all driven by emotions when making donation decisions—and that’s okay. Emotions motivate us to give and foster empathy for the recipients. I saw several faces light up with relief when they realized they weren’t alone in prioritizing emotion over purely effectiveness-driven calculations. ?? Celebrate impact together: There’s something special about celebrating your impact with others. The event was filled with meaningful conversations, positive energy, and a real sense of community. I’ll definitely organize another one next year. Why not try hosting one in your own community?

##URGENT !!!!! Cedar Creek Lake, Texas. 52 miles SE of Dallas, Texas. ##MANY DOGS IN NEED OF FUREVER HOMES AND OUT OF VET BOARDING! NEIBORHOOD ANIMAL NETWORK PLEASE TEXT 903 288 8585 I have worked in animal rescue with rescue groups and many times on my own. With our rural area having a inhumane practice of dumping dogs and throwing unwanted litters of puppies and kittens in the trash, you can imagine what it is like trying to find homes. There are no foster homes and no adoptions here unless you are the type of person to stand out on the street with a sign that states, "Free to Good Home." As you can imagine, you don't do if you work in rescue to save the animals you saved from the street and spent thousands of dollars in vetting fees. Dogs from the streets always need vetting. Recently, we were offered an unused building to house in safeaty the dogs we had that had no place to go. In order to save animals you at least have to have shelter for them. True shelter, where they don't get killed if no one wants them. Therefore, we were delighted to accept the use of the building. We were so very fortunate enough to have so many things donated to us. Most was sent to us from local people, two or three donors, and from fundraisers. Unfortunately, after all the investment in time, effort and donated money, the owner found other plans for the same building. We were given one week in which to move about 19 dogs with the threat of confiscation if we did not. We were lucky and some did make great adoptons! 13 did not. Miracles do happen. Even in these days it is sometimes in the form of a human. We were able to board our thirteen dogs at our vet. No easy feet. We were down to two volunteers who moved all those dogs by themselves. We want all of them to have great homes. But if not, if you are a larger rescue that can help with the puppies or dogs, please text us. There is no place to take them and they cannot stay in a vet boarding. It isn't healthy, even if the cost was not astronomical. Anyone in rescue knows just how long it takes to find a qualified, loving furever home. I am looking for larger groups with larger networks, in state our OUT of state, as long as you are qualified and welcome them with open arms. WE WILL transport. I have three sets of puppies who have already practically grown up in the vet's office. One set of four pyr mix cuties, one set of four heelers, in need of space, two mixed cuties, and two older puppies who will need a little work but they are so deserving. A boy and girl, rottie mix, very mixed, six month old, and very frightened of people. They will need a great deal of work. They need loving, patient foster mom and dad. And they are escape artists! We have three adults. We in herited them from a hoarding situation. Two were adopted to a great foster mom. We have a boy, and two girls. They are all under 1 year. Please share this post, call or text anytime. They are waiting for you. Post with Ai

If you know anyone working on or funding effective animal welfare projects, I’d love an intro or a tag. ?????? We’re considering adding a new Cause Area to our app to fund animal welfare projects. If our users hold $1M in Glo Dollars toward this cause, we'd donate up to $40K per year to animal charities—at no cost to our users. About Glo Dollar: Glo Dollar is a digital asset designed to make philanthropy zero-cost. When users spend or hold Glo Dollars, they support causes like fighting poverty and tackling climate change, at no cost to them.

Heckerling Day 3 and I got to sit in on an incredible session on my favorite topic: charitable planning! Alan Rothschild had some particularly great insights on the importance of a well-drafted charitable gift agreement, both for gifts made during life and testamentary gifts. These agreements should not only outline the terms of the gift (donee, amount, timing, governing law, etc.), but, most importantly: ?? Should address any restrictions on the use of the funds ??Client is donating and getting naming rights for a building at their Alma Mater and is a staunch animal rights supporter? So, they certainly don’t want animal testing in that building, right? So, then they should specify no animal testing can happen in the building! ?? Should contemplate changes in circumstance ??What happens if the school shuts down? If the building needs significant repairs or becomes obsolete? ?? Should address issues of morality (on both sides) ?? What if the donee commits a heinous crime? Can the school un-name the building? In addition, these agreements should get into the particulars of how funds will be spent, how excess income should be treated, whether management fees can be paid from the fund, etc. While your clients will need to work with an attorney to draft these agreements, advisors are likely the first line of defense to raise these issues when a gift is being made, so it is important to inform clients of the importance of defining their wishes… in a legally binding document ??
