In our biggest conference to date, THIS Space 2024 hosted an array of speakers to discuss the leading research and evidence in improving the quality and safety of healthcare. Five research fellows from our fellowship programme delivered insightful lightning talks exploring varied subjects contributing to the advancing the field of healthcare improvement. Topics ranged from using big data for intelligent blood test ordering to co-designing quality improvement strategies in specialist eating disorder units, to addressing the challenges of national clinical audits in the stroke community, plus sharing learning from mixed methods approaches when examining variation in prescribing practices and implementing new service models for perioperative care for older people. I thoroughly enjoyed attending the INFORMS 2024 Annual Meeting in Seattle, Washington. It was an honor to present my research, "Taking One for the Team: Improving Safety-Net Hospital Performance by Creating an Advanced Dedicated Observation Unit," in a session on Empirical Healthcare Operations organized by David Rea. Our paper explores the critical role that Dedicated Observation Units (DOUs) can play in addressing the financial and capacity challenges faced by Safety-Net hospitals. Looking forward to future discussions on advancing healthcare delivery and support for these essential institutions."

I'm excited to share two recent publications focused on comprehensive integration of physical activity into healthcare systems. Physical activity has so many health (and other!) benefits and there is so much room to better incorporate physical activity into clinical care. Check out the publications below or reach out to me or the masterminds behind this collaboration -- Jennifer Trilk, PhD, FACSM, DipACLM and Mark Stoutenberg -- to learn more. 1. In Research & Innovation, patients are at the heart of everything we do. Their involvement drives the breakthroughs that shape the future of healthcare. Last year, over 20,000 patients took part in research at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. Their contributions helped us explore new treatments, improve care, and address some of the biggest challenges in medicine. Research is more than science it’s about people making a real difference. By participating, patients become partners in transforming healthcare for future generations. #HealthcareInnovation #PatientCare #ResearchMatters Ai Lyn Tan Dr Helen Radford Richard Evans Hanif Ismail

I had the honor of presenting our findings, on behalf of Sophie Poelman and colleagues, at the EAPC. We discussed how specialist-provided end-of-life scenarios might be crucial for initiating Advanced Care Planning (ACP) in primary care. It was encouraging to see a lovely discussion emerge, highlighting the potential impact of our research. This dialogue complements the ongoing research of Annemiek van Eden, raising key questions: - What exactly do these scenarios entail? Do they address non-medical issues as well? - How should these scenarios be documented? Are smartphrases utilized effectively, and are they sufficiently personalized for each patient? Is it ethical to include these in letters to GPs, knowing that patients might read them? Looking forward to further exploring these important questions and advancing our understanding in this vital area of healthcare.
