Musk’s pay will be used as an additional prop to support the contention that CEOs are rare and precious and that their position at the top rung of the ladder is the work of a finely tuned market where supply meets demand at an excessive level of remuneration. Musk’s proposed award will be used to provide cover for outrageous payments to mediocre executive talent across the globe with the glib gibe, “Ah, but it’s not a fraction of what Musk got!” The carriers of the remuneration virus are the remuneration consultants and remuneration committee members who constitute the global remuneration industry. The industry has served its paymasters exceedingly in recent decades. Over the same period, average worker pay grew by just 18%. Investors in Japan have a lot of power; the trouble is, they don’t use it. There’s no such thing as a staggered board, like they have in the US. In Japanese annual general meetings, you have a binding vote on every board member together - in almost all companies that’s every year. If you don’t like management, you can fire the lot of the bums - all, on one day. Last year, a number of CEOs looked in imminent danger of ejection, with re-election support rates barely over 50%. Most were actist targets being targeted for shamefully stodgy balance sheets. What happened to those bosses this year? Their support exploded upwards - *without the problems being rectified*. Sadly, most investors lack the staying power for effecting behavioural change. In the immortal words of Jack Nicholson, “you can’t handle the truth”. But there were some dramatic wins and losses.. NO RISK … NO REWARD.??IT’S A FACT OF LIFE. This is a very, very smart employee compensation strategy by Musk and Tesla, because people work harder and smarter when they have “skin in the game”. Moreover, stock grants and RSUs are generally not counted by the IRS as taxable income until they become fully vested and “owned”, https://lnkd.in/e6M3bmhM.? And while Tesla, X, SpaceX, Starlink, Neuralink, and other Musk enterprises may pay a bit less in base salaries compared to other competitive companies, at least their employees are building some personal equity over time and winding up with a lot more than just a bunch of old pay stubs. Of course, you have to believe in the company and be able to afford tax-deferred income, but it’s a very attractive incentive for the best of talents who are patient, willing to sacrifice, and see the future. And who better than Elon Musk to bet on? The guy is literally "changing the world" ... scientifically, economically, militarily, socially, and politically. Indeed, Musk, by invitation, was just on a phone call only three days ago with Trump talking with Ukraine President Zelensky, and that tells you a lot about how important and influential Musk is. What do you mean you don't want to pay me more than the GDP of Sudan (and 101 other countries)?? ?? I'm always fascinated at the news storm around CEO comp. The lottery winnings sized numbers are hard to actually conceive, but anyone who puts a hard day of work out in the heat or cold, or puts up with terrible managers, or basically can't make ends meet surely has to at least shake their head at top end CEO pay. ? Surely there is some number of compensation millions that would upkeep a lifestyle of the excessive wealth that falls vastly short of the billion-dollar-mark? But on the other hand, US voters have a long history of upholding the Horatio Alger rag-to-riches dream (mythology?), and believing more or less that "once you're there, you should be allowed to stay there." ?? With Musk fans/followers/ateers aplenty, and his brand of sleek advancement, it is safe to say that this Norway fund's POV will have detractors. However, I do like some pragmatic thinking, and if he's got 13% of the stock, he has a pretty robust incentive to lead performance, and a disincentive to abandon Tesla... so are we really afraid he won't keep doing the job if he isn't given 25% of the company? ?? https://lnkd.in/gNNgnRce Guess we need something to keep us entertained.
