The Department of Defense (DoD) is soliciting public comments on enhancing AI integration within the Defense Industrial Base (DIB), as per a notice in the Federal Register. The DoD seeks written responses by July 22 to inform policies and initiatives that will bolster AI capabilities in defense systems. The feedback will assist in creating a Trusted AI Defense Industrial Base Roadmap, addressing key areas like supply chain resilience, infrastructure resilience, workforce training, AI innovation, and acquisition policies. ? On July 22, the Coalition submitted comments in response to the DoD Request for Information (RFI) on the defense industrial base’s (DIB) adoption of AI for defense applications. The purpose of the RFI was to allow DoD to gather information that will support their efforts in developing policies, initiatives, and resource distribution to ensure support for the DIB in integrating AI into defense systems. ???Transforming USAF Predictive Maintenance with C3 AI??? The U.S. Air Force faced significant challenges with its legacy predictive maintenance systems, which lacked government ownership, scalability, and the necessary Authorization to Operate (ATO). These gaps hindered the adoption of modern AI/ML approaches and made traditional Sensor-Based Algorithms (SBA) less effective. To overcome these issues, the USAF's Rapid Sustainment Office (RSO) turned to C3 AI. C3 AI’s scalable solution enables the integration of telemetry sensor data across multiple aircraft platforms, including the B-1B, into a unified model. This AI-driven approach not only enhances system and component failure predictions but also supports the deployment of advanced SBA models, streamlines maintenance workflows, and ensures robust data ingestion capabilities. With C3 AI, the USAF is modernising its predictive maintenance, ensuring better performance, readiness, and longevity of its aircraft. ???? I'm a big believer that the BIGGEST time suck for federal workers is the paperwork and bureaucracy that has to be dealt with day in and day out. We're not struggling to turn out mission systems because the technology is lacking...or resources (sometimes ??) or lack of skilled workers ...it's because those skilled workers waste valuable grey matter formatting word documents, writing overly wordy paragraphs, and building PowerPoints. Let's let the AI take our technical speak and turn them "manager" (??) and let the AI track our progress, and do the work that doesn't require much grey matter. Air Force Sustainment Center gets it. The rest of the DAF needs to get on board and go #digitalAF As I heard so eloquently, "AI is great for doing tasks that are hard to do, but easy to verify." Let's do more of this! Pentagon Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Officer (CDAO) Radha Plumb is launching the Open Data and Applications Government-owned Interoperable Repositories (Open DAGIR), a new multi-vendor ecosystem aimed at integrating data platforms, development tools, and applications while preserving government data ownership and industry intellectual property. This initiative supports the Defense Department’s (DoD) efforts to scale data, analytics, and AI capabilities, starting with the Combined Joint All Domain Command and Control (CJADC2) program. Open DAGIR ensures enduring access to government-owned, contractor-operated technology stacks, facilitating innovative industry solutions for warfighters and decision-makers. The DoD recently awarded a $480 million contract to Palantir for its Maven Smart System prototype, highlighting the importance of rapid and secure integration of third-party capabilities.
