Financial incentives are needed to get people to switch from their internal combustion engine cars to less polluting electric vehicles. Interesting concept outlined here, having automakers enact "buy and lease" programs to get those cars off the road. Of course, the automakers would have to be incentivized, too.

Plug in Hybrid vehicles consume on average 3,5 times more than the official WLTP number. ?? This means that a car can be advertised at 50g of CO2 per km, but in real life it will produce 175g of CO2 per km. Hybrid vehicles are a false good idea and significantly slow down the transportation sector in its CO2 reduction goals. We all know someone who owns a hybrid vehicle and only uses the electric motor. But the data over more than 100 000 cars are shocking. I also think it is misleading consumers who genuinely want to reduce their carbon footprint. See the study here: https://lnkd.in/eBQJD6y9

General Motors had built an EV car as early as the 1990s. Perhaps the very first EV car to hit the market made its appearance in 1996, but disappeared soon after! The story is thought provoking.
