?????????????? ???? ?????? ???????? ?????????????? ???? ?????????????? ????????????????????????! Having reached the midway point of the year, it is time to take a step back and restock. Jobsites across North America will soon slow as workers head off on well-deserved breaks in anticipation of the second half of the year. This doesn’t necessarily mean that projects will taper off, however. The construction industry is one of innovation and ingenuity. For example, the economic outlook is much more positive than it was twelve months ago, largely due to the enormous impact that building and infrastructure work has brought. Despite the negative predictions, it seems as though the construction industry has managed to weather any potential storms and is looking forward to good times ahead. ? In this issue, we are thrilled to bring you many examples of this impact. Across North America, jobsites are buzzing with skill and innovation. We have the stories that shine a light on them. We take a look at how naturally found stones can create carbon neutral cement, we find out about electronic waste that can be dissolved in water and we explore power generation methods that could actually be carbon negative. Alongside that, we share stories from some of the most inventive and forward-thinking companies working today. We are now at the half-way point. For those working in the industry, holidays can wait. "How DARE you encourage my child to seek a career opportunity in Construction?" Yikes ?? Yes, this is an actual message someone received, and yes there is a HUGE misconception about what construction is nowadays! I believe people have a preconceived notion of construction and the lifestyles and culture associated with that. Why? I believe it's because we haven't done a good enough job of showcasing who we are as an industry. Other people and other industries have told our story for us. That's not ideal ??♂? Thankfully, things are changing and there is light at the end of the tunnel! With more companies understanding the need to tell their story, showcase their people, and unveil the hundreds of different career opportunities within construction, we're beginning to see a shift. We need to keep pushing, keep sharing, keep being transparent and keep telling our stories! I want to thank Ben Dundass from Eastern Valley Electric LTD, Justin Bontkes from Caliber Projects, Peter Mihalech from B&B Contracting Group and James Stiksma from Canadian Septic for taking the time to share their stories and their perspectives on construction and what that means for the coming generations! #constructionindustry #leadershipdevelopment #storytelling

Passionate Engineer Inspiring Growth and Innovation in the Engineering World | Production Engineering Manager
Some things are built to last, so what considerations did the engineers from 150 years ago need to make? ?? Designed by Sir Joseph Bazalgette?and built in 1887 this bridge has served the test of time. ? It's a suspension bridge, it uses the large pillars on either side of the river to hang the cable (in this case chain) over the span of the Thames that the road is suspended from. ? So, what would you need to consider to design this bridge? ? ? Length of the river (thinking about the shortest point to minimise material/loads). ? Weight and density of the traffic using it (it was horse and cart back in the day, so the bridge has required strengthening over the years). ? Weight of the material used in construction (it has to hold its own weight as part of the calculation). ? Stretching, over time and use the material will stress and stretch. ? Environment, wind shear forces acting on the bridge and the seasonal changes. ? River traffic, the Thames is a busy river and the pass under it had to be considered for the maximum height of boats to travel past. ? This is just my take thinking about what they considered, can you think of anything else? (Living near a historic example of engineering has its benefits!) ? ----- Connect with me and enable notifications (??) for daily insights on engineering excellence, mentorship, and personal development. ? The key driver of recent industrial vacancy rate increases is beginning to abate. In 24Q1, construction completions dropped 30%. They're set to continue to recede each quarter for at least another 18 months (likely longer) and fall to 10-year lows by mid-2025. Subscribers can read more here:
