Thousands quietly show they care—this inspires me every day! I’m so grateful—and inspired—to share that Union Gospel Mission (Vancouver) is now ranked #5 among the top charities in BC by revenue raised for 2023! What inspires me most isn’t the number itself—it’s what it says about our communities. At a time when public dialogue can feel heavy with negativity about poverty, homelessness, and addiction, this ranking tells a different story: thousands of people quietly giving, showing how deeply they care. Yesterday was #NationalPhilanthropyDay, a reminder of the power of generosity. This ranking is proof of that power. This is not just a statistic; it’s a devastating reality for many. ?? Gender-based violence is far more common than most people realize, and we are in the midst of an epidemic. So we all know that HT is horrible, and traumatic. We know it shouldn’t happen, and our laws and culture need to change to protect our children better. We all know that it takes a lot of resources and support to stand a chance at healing. But what would you do to truly help a survivor? Would you help them heal, if you could? I am once again asking for your help. September is National Suicide Prevention Month. I know it's a dark topic but we need to talk about. In the USA alone, we lost around 50,000 people in 2023 and even more have attempted and even more than that suffer from mental health issues and suicidal ideation. There is a good chance that you are either directly or indirectly impacted by these facts. It may be you, a loved one, a coworker, a neighbor, etc. who is struggling. Maybe you or someone you know has lost someone. We need to openly talk about this subject. We need to bring it out of the darkness and into the light so that we can help everyone who is struggling. Winter can be especially hard for those who are experiencing homelessness or hardship. Sleeping rough has additional struggles during winter, facing bitterly cold nights and potential rain. Keeping warm can be impossible when you are struggling to pay the rent and cannot afford heating costs. Meals Plus provides a safe, warm space for people who are experiencing homelessness or hardship. It is distressing to see the increasing number of guests attending Meals Plus - people who are experiencing homelessness or at real risk of homelessness due to financial strains or unsafe living environments as a result of family and domestic violence. We need your help this winter so that we can continue to provide a warm meal and assistance with essentials, as well as access to vital services to assist with housing, Centrelink payments, mental and physical health and the many other complex issues our guests may be facing. ???? As we reflect on 2024, we must confront the tragic realities of gender-based violence abuse. This year, Bethesda House has experienced a staggering 63% increase in crisis calls to our 24/7 crisis line from the first 3 months of 2024 (January-March) to the past 3 months (July- September). These numbers are not just statistics; they represent urgent pleas for help from women, many of whom have young children in desperate need of support. Gender-based violence is far more prevalent than many people realize, and it affects our entire community. The recent tragic incident of intimate partner violence in Courtice highlights the deathly consequences of this crisis. Two women lost their lives at the hands of a man, leaving a toddler without his mother and grandmother. I am once again reaching out to my network to talk about a topic no one wants to talk about. Suicide is a very real issue in the world. In the United States alone we saw nearly 50,000 suicides in 2022, a 2.6% increase from 2021. Those numbers represent actual people in our communities. 50,000 mothers, fathers, sons, daughters, best friends, and more lost. What those numbers don't show are the people who attempted but didn't pass away. It also doesn't show those who were left behind when a loved one made that decision. Many lives are impacted when someone makes that choice. Every year I contribute to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention 's "Out of Darkness Walk" here in San Francisco. We raise money to provide money for research and services to help address this issue. This issue is very important to me as I believe our mental health is important and that every life deserves to be saved. Every year I ask my network to donate to this cause to help us save lives.
