I recently presented a seminar on “Innovative Methodologies and Technology Integration in Education.” At Bright Technical and Vocational Institute Over nearly four years of teaching across various age groups and institutes, I have learned that education goes far beyond preparing slides for students to memorize. It is about creating meaningful and engaging learning experiences. For example, in courses like History of Architecture, Building Conservation, and Styles of Interior Design, I have sought to make theoretical topics more interactive and practical, helping students connect the material to real-world applications. This approach stems from my belief: Teach in a way you wish you had been taught. By encouraging participation, collaboration, and hands-on learning, we can ensure that students truly engage with and remember what they learn. The seminar concluded with a question for reflection: What stops us from embracing technology in our classrooms? At Blur Architecture, we've recently taken on a new school project, and it's involved lots and lots of planning. More than the usual… Designing big purpose-built spaces like these requires forethought – and a way we make sure they are 'future-proofed' is by asking the people who will use them for their input. It's masterplanning through a community-centric lens, and it's the best way to make sure we get things right now to avoid redevelopment in the future. As part of this new project, here's a snapshot of the things we've asked students to gauge their needs (and wants!) from their learning environment: ? Describe what you like or dislike about the school and why. ? Tell us about your daily routine - the place you prefer to go at lunch, where you like to play with friends and any places you avoid. ? Draw, write or model what your dream school would look like. I'm going to share more of our school planning process in another post soon, once we've synthesised the results of the survey we undertook with this group of students. In the meantime, I want to hear what you think. The Architects in Schools (AIS) program, a cornerstone initiative by AIA Chicago Foundation Board , just wrapped up another successful cycle, Fall 2024. The program, which brings architecture professionals into classrooms, continues to highlight the importance of fostering #creativity, #problemsolving, and #spatialawareness among young learners. This year we enjoyed the hospitality of Chicago Public Schools Whittier Dual Language Academy and Daniel R Cameron Public School. Huge shout out to Cristian Andres Yugsi Diaz who went over and beyond the call of duty as Lead Mentor at Whittier. Here at design group JEDI Incorporated, we are grateful to be amongst this cohort of individuals and firms who truly invest in shaping young minds for tomorrow. The Mission of AIS AIS serves as a bridge between the architectural community and the educational sphere, aiming to inspire students by teaching them about the built environment. It’s not just about architecture; it’s about #empoweringstudents to think critically about #design, #sustainability, and the spaces they inhabit daily. Key Highlights from This Year’s Program Engagement: Architects collaborated with educators to deliver hands-on lessons in design and planning, emphasizing the relevance of architecture to community and individual well-being. Creativity in Action: Students worked on design projects, learning about the fundamentals of architecture while solving real-world problems. ? Impact: Participants gained insights into architecture as a career and how design shapes the world around us, sparking interest in STEAM (#Science, #Technology, #Engineering, #Arts, and #Math) fields. The Value of the Program For architects, AIS is more than an outreach program—it’s a chance to give back and share the values of their profession. For students, it’s an opportunity to see how they can influence their communities and explore pathways in design and architecture. Looking Ahead As the program concludes, its success underscores the importance of such initiatives in shaping future generations of thinkers and doers. It’s a reminder that architecture isn't just about buildings—it's about people, ideas, and the future.

Today is my daughter’s first day of school, a milestone that reminds me of the importance of strong foundations. Just as a well-built structure needs a solid base to stand the test of time, our children need a firm foundation of learning and support to grow and thrive. In architecture, we carefully consider every detail to ensure that the final design not only looks good but serves its purpose effectively for years to come. Similarly, in education, we must lay down the right groundwork, encouraging curiosity, resilience, and a love for learning from the very beginning.
