Across Sussex, there are over 7,000 children and young people waiting for an assessment for their mental health. The average wait time, in East Sussex, for an intervention is 2-3 years. 2-3 years? Parents and carers want to be better equipped for supporting their child's emotional and mental health. But the available services leaves 60% behind. Our brilliant team of volunteers at Holding Space Eastbourne bridges this gap, providing parent peer support with the aim to make sure every parent and carer across East Sussex feels heard, supported, and confident. Preventing families from reaching crisis point. (I know, it's a big deal and they're bloody amazing). The problem we have is the demand for our services outweighs our limited resources (we're a fully volunteer-led team!) So I'm looking for local businesses who can help. As part of a Big Give campaign, we're asking for pledges to help fundraise for our small charity. The funds raised will give us the chance to employ a permanent Parent Peer Support Worker - meeting the needs of more parents and carers and making the difference in our community. Our current team of volunteers provide 1:1 support with telephone and face to face sessions, workshops, coffee mornings. Tangible help, that actually makes a difference. Again - (did I mention we're all volunteers?) being volunteer-led we're limited on stretching our resources to the full potential. It's more than just a home...it's about creating space and independence!?? The step change from?#homelessness, to a hostel, to a flat (assuming that's available) is too much for many people and therefore our Partners are able to stand in the gap and provide fully independent living but with floating support.? Here are some of the many things they do: ?? Prevent isolation ?? Encourage social interaction ?? Provide a residential address - this helps massively with finding work? ?? Introduce the resident to other agencies who can help i.e. counselling, trauma support, qualifications etc. ?? Take them to medical appointments? ?? Help them with their benefit applications ?? Encourage residents to engage in meaningful activities such as volunteering, training, education or employment ?? Provide reassuring support on a daily basis ?? Keep people safe ?? Help restore family and personal relationships.? Each person is unique and has different needs, with different reasons for being?#homeless. Trigger warning: post contains mention of suicide. I recently had the privilege of providing bereavement support to staff and students within a local school, following a death by suicide. At #WiltshireTreehouse (WTH) we are doing more of this type of work in response to local need, and school staff really appreciate having access to hands-on, in person support for those affected within the school community. Below is lovely feedback from my recent visit and I’m keen to hear from any partners who can support with funding this type of work so that we can make it part of our regular offer across Swindon & Wiltshire. There are some great organisations out there who support after a death by suicide, but to the best of my knowledge our in-person, in-school support to peer groups affected by a suicide is unique (and it is so needed as part of the prevention of further suicides). Currently WTH is not funded to undertake this niche work and we’d love to offer it more consistently, but need funding to do so. 2025 marks 8 years of NWR serving the Capital Region by hosting empowering workshops, educational programs, peer support meet-ups, and even a building an indoor skatepark! As a grassroots nonprofit, we are continuously evolving to support our community’s diverse needs with the help of our loyal volunteers and fundraisers.
