Following up on my last hardtech post with some more love for San Diego! San Diego's biotech and life sciences sector is currently a powerhouse in the US, consistently ranking among the top hubs for innovation and investment. Known accurately as a part of Biotech Beach, San Diego is home to over 1,800 life sciences companies and has seen tremendous growth, with the sector growing by 51% over the last decade. In 2021, San Diego attracted a record $5.1 billion in VC funding, positioning it third in the nation, trailing only behind Boston and the Bay Area. Additionally, San Diego's companies secured $1.1 billion in National Institutes of Health funding, ranking the city fourth nationally in this category. The life sciences ecosystem here is further bolstered by its world-class research institutions, such as UC San Diego, the Salk Institute, and Scripps Research, which continue to receive significant grants and investments. For instance, UC San Diego recently received a $150 million donation to expand its stem cell and regenerative medicine programs. As the city continues to cultivate its AI and ML capabilities within the life sciences, San Diego is well-positioned to maintain its status as a leading biotech hub, driving innovations that will shape the future of healthcare. At the Longevity Workshop in collaboration with the Longevity Biotech Fellowship, Max Novendstern Worldcoin highlighted his work on developing in vitro organs through a tissue engineering lab aimed at making vital organs universally accessible. He emphasized three key premises: that organogenesis, or growing new organs, is an underrated but promising path to longevity; that in vitro development, where organs are grown in controlled environments, offers greater flexibility and scalability than other methods; and that current technological advancements make this endeavor feasible. While he explored alternatives like xenotransplantation and chimerism, he argued that in vitro development provides more control and long-term potential for improving human health. We were thrilled to visit?Dr. Iftach Nachman's fascinating lab, focused on understanding early developmental cell fate decisions and patterning using stem cell-based models. The lab uses?embryo-like models?with ES cells carrying distinct markers, live imaging with two-photon microscopy, and control the mechanical and biochemical?model?environment. Additionally, the lab utilizes and explores stem-cell-based 3D models for large-scale muscle mass production in cultured meat applications.?Dr. Nachman's groundbreaking technology serves as the foundation for Ramot's startup, Forsea, which specializes in the production of non-GMO cultivated seafood meat.
