I recently viewed my mentor Miro Copic's segment on KPBS's Friday Business Report regarding this year's Comic-Con, and there's a significant amount of activity happening behind the scenes. Here are some key highlights: ? A potential strike by 650 convention center employees was narrowly avoided with a nearly 50% wage increase over four years. ? Comic-Con will stay in San Diego for another year. The major issue remains hotel room availability, with only 14,000 discounted rooms for 135,000 attendees, causing concern over high costs. ? An August hearing could lead to a significant increase in funds for expanding the convention center and improving local infrastructure. ? After last year’s strike, studios are back to engage with fans and share updates on major franchises like Marvel, DC, House of the Dragon, and Star Wars. For a more in-depth analysis, be sure to follow my mentor's weekly segment on KPBS and watch the video for a detailed explanation of all the developments! (Video: https://lnkd.in/g5t3ptub) It's exciting to see all the efforts to keep Comic-Con vibrant and engaging. Looking forward to all the unique sights and experiences at Comic-Con 2024. #ComicCon2024 #KPBSBusinessReport #Business
https://lnkd.in/dm38gaEu Here's my take on this year's Comic-Con as highlighted in my weekly KPBS show Friday Business Report. Comic-Con kicks off tomorrow and there have already been a lot of behind the scenes issues between the City of San Diego, the convention center, the San Diego Tourism Authority and Comic-Con. First, a major strike was averted with all 650 convention center employees poised to go on strike the week before Comic-Con and, at the last minute, they approved a nearly 50% wage increase over four years. Second, Comic-Con and the San Diego Tourism Authority agreed that Comic-Con would remain in San Diego an additional year (the Tourism Authority was hoping for a two year extension). The issue is that Comic-Con is not happy with the number of hotel rooms available at a discount. Right now about 60 hotels are delivering 14,000 hotel rooms between $200-$400 night. But there are 135,000 attendees. Not everyone needs a hotel, but that's a big disparity. Other hotel rooms that are not part of the deal are going for upwards of $1,000 / night. Comic-Con is worried that fans may not want to return. However, Los Angeles or Anaheim cannot match the Gaslamp experience that San Diego offers, along with all the free Comic-Con events / activities in the downtown area outside the convention center. Third, there will be a hearing in late August on the hotel tax initiative that failed by less than 1% to meet the two thirds voter threshold. Since the vote, a number of these initiatives were classified as citizen initiatives and require only a 50% +1 vote threshold. If San Diego gets a positive verdict, this will raise hundreds of millions of dollars to expand the convention center and fix local area infrastructure. So while fans are arriving by the thousands, a lot is going on behind the scenes to hopefully keep Comic-Con in San Diego. Finally, last year Comic-Con ran during the writers (and subsequent actors) strike. Hall H, which showcases the biggest events at Comic-Con, was empty last year as actors and writers did not attend last years event. This did not dim visitor enthusiasm as Comic-Con went back to its roots. This year, the studios are all back in force as there hasn't been a huge blockbuster since Marvel's End Game and the studios need to be out in front of their fans and tell them where all the Marvel and DC story arcs are going...not to mention all the other important movie and TV franchises like HBO's House of the Dragon, Lucas Film Star Wars, etc. So sit back and enjoy all the delights and unique sights of Comic-Con as it will be back in full force in 2024!
