It might look like this weapon came out of a movie or videogame, but back in 2015, DRDC and Colt Canada developed this integrated assault rifle concept for the Canadian Armed Forces. Their goal was to create a multi-role platform that provided more firepower, improved accuracy, and smart integration of accessories that connected to command-and-control networks. DRDC scientists rose to the challenge and worked with advanced material and electronic component technologies to test ergonomics, lightweight case telescoped ammunition, automatic target detection and data-sharing, and assisted target engagement (like a real world “aim-assist”). Though this rifle never made it past the prototype stage, it provided some important lessons and data to help move forward the Small Arms Modernization project, which successfully delivered on its other objectives like the C-22 Pistol, C-21 Sharpshooter Rifle, and C-19 Ranger Rifle. B-1B Brought Out of Mothballs to Fly Once Again ??Resurrection of B-1B Rage: The B-1B Lancer, nicknamed Rage, has resumed flying after three years in storage at Davis–Monthan Air Force Base, Tucson, Arizona. ?? ??Fleet Consolidation: Rage was among 17 B-1Bs retired in 2021 to reduce the fleet from 62 to 45, aiming to improve readiness and cut costs. The B-21 Stealth Raider is set to replace the B-1B. ??Type 2000 Storage: Rage was stored in Type 2000 (reclaimable) storage, allowing for easier reactivation compared to Type 1000 (inviolate) storage. ??Replacement for Crashed Aircraft: The bomber is likely reactivated to replace a B-1B that crashed at Ellsworth Air Force Base in January 2024, as strict legal requirements mandate a fleet of 45 B-1Bs. ??Historical Context: Similar actions have been taken before, such as the reactivation of B-1B Lancelot earlier this year and other bombers like B-52 Wise Guy and Ghost Rider in previous years. ??Fleet Importance: Despite downsizing, the B-1B remains valuable for its long-range strike capabilities and potential to carry advanced weapons, including hypersonic missiles, especially for operations in the Pacific against China. ??Future Outlook: The B-1 fleet, including Rage, will continue to be used until its eventual retirement, though the small number of remaining attrition reserve airframes is a concern. Recently, the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) completed a 21-day exercise at Fort Campbell, Kentucky called Operation Lethal Eagle. This exercise was the first comprehensive field assessment of the Army’s initiative “transforming in contact”, which is the process of ongoing development of solutions through the rapid prototyping of organizational and technological changes and integrating them into units. A big part of this exercise was testing new initiatives in electromagnetic warfare, especially the importance of reducing or masking a unit’s digital signature. “If you can be seen, you can be killed,” Maj. Gen. Brett Sylvia, commander of the 101st, said during a recent media round table. “And that’s not just visually seen. Can your electromagnetic signature be seen as well?
