This was my ?? moment when I was getting into TMJ massage. I spent a year exclusively working with pre and postpartum clients and this connection came up often. How is it possible that these two separate areas of the body are connected? The connection between the jaw and the pelvic floor begins in utero around the 3rd week. The embryo forms two indents next to each other, one of which will become the opening for the mouth, and the other the openings for the organs housed in the pelvis. These two areas of the body remain connected even as the spine grows and widens the space between the two. Clenching or grinding the jaw can cause the muscles around the TMJ to contract, which can lead to guarding in the pelvic floor muscles. This same response can happen the other way around. Because the two areas stay connected, differences in posture can impact the TMJ and pelvic floor. Think of forward head posture or an anterior pelvic tilt. Tension in the fascial line that runs from the jaw muscles to the hip muscles, can affect the TMJ and pelvic floor. The jaw and the pelvic floor are also connected by the vagus nerve. The vagus nerve establishes connections with the back of the tongue, the vocal cords, and even the uterus! The vagus nerve aids in soothing both the mind and body. Being a part of the parasympathetic nervous system, it contributes to creating feelings of safety and connection. This dysfunction can happen in all genders. Genders of child bearing capability tend to experience this more often due to pregnancy and vaginal birth. #tmj #tmjd #tmjdisorder #tmjtreatment #pelvicfloor #pelvicfloordysfunction #tmjandpelvicfloor #mindblown #anatomy #denver #colorado #tmjology #vagusnerve

Brittany Mahomes's recent revelation about her fractured back serves as a powerful reminder of the often overlooked aspect of women's health: pelvic floor care. The reality is about 1 in 4 women and 1 in 5 men are affected by pelvic floor disorders. And if you’re a mom like Brittany – you might be part of the 60% of individuals who deal with pelvic pain during pregnancy. Yet, only 20% receive some form of pelvic therapy ?? Pelvic floor physical therapy isn’t just about doing kegels (in fact – it could even be bad for you if you have a tight pelvic floor!) Your pelvic floor is the foundation of everything from pain management to bladder control and core stability. If you think you might benefit from pelvic floor therapy – you can speak to one of the physical therapists at Indigo Physiotherapy. Geek out with me on pelvic floor anatomy chat ?? It's common knowledge that childbirth can cause some serious issues down there - but what actually happens anatomically? ???? It's pretty incredible and wow our bodies are truly a miracle! ?? During pregnancy, your pelvic floor muscles endure a serious amount of strain as they support the weight of your growing baby. The pressure increases as your baby gains weight, leading to the stretching and weakening of these muscles. When you give birth the pelvic floor undergoes even more stress. ???? As the baby passes through the birth canal, the muscles and connective tissues can become overstretched, and in some cases, they may tear. Ouch!! This damage can result in a weakening of the pelvic floor’s ability to properly support the pelvic organs, leading to various postpartum issues such as incontinence and prolapse. ?? The postpartum period, often referred to as the fourth trimester, is a critical time for healing. Your body begins to recover from the immense changes of pregnancy and childbirth, but this recovery process can take time, particularly for the pelvic floor. Even if you had a cesarean section, your pelvic floor may still be affected by the weight of the pregnancy and the effects of surgery. If you have had a baby recently and are experiencing pelvic floor dysfunction - first and foremost see a specialist and get diagnosed! When you are ready you can start to incorporate more holistic practices such as yoga and breathwork to help heal and maintain the health of your core and floor. Did you know that pelvic floor disorders affect about 1 in 4 women and 1 in 5 men? And this number only increases as you age… Brittany Mahomes's recent revelation about her fractured back has sparked a crucial (and long overdue) conversation about pelvic floor care. If you're one of the many moms experiencing pelvic pain during pregnancy – you're not alone! Studies show that 60% of individuals face this challenge. Yet, despite the prevalence of pelvic floor issues, only a fraction receive the care they need. ?? Plus – most people wrongly assume pelvic therapy is only important if you’re pregnant or if you’ve had a child. When, in fact, your pelvic floor could be causing: ??Problems with urination or bowel movements ??Low back, pelvic, or tailbone pain ??Difficulties holding back gas ??Sexual dysfunction & more So whether you’re prepping for birth or navigating menopause, the right pelvic health care can make every day a good day. As your largest and most visible organ your skin offers a lot of information about what’s happening beneath the surface. That’s because your skin is intimately connected to your brain and they are talking to each other constantly. And it’s a two-way communication. What shows up on your skin can affect your thoughts, feelings and sensations and vice-versa. What and how they communicate with each other can contribute to creating a felt sense of ease and comfort living inside your skin or it can create a felt sense of emotions like shame, embarrassment and dis-ease. So how does this play out in real time? I’ll share an example from one of my clients who struggles with chronic hives to help illuminate. Recent research has found a connection between childhood trauma and chronic hives. (PMID: 36910444) As we explored her experience with hives, we quickly revealed that she hasn’t felt supported by her friends and family about her vision for a new business venture. She’s felt like she has no one to really talk to that wants to listen, that understands her and supports her. Without the support she needed and desired, she had begun to quiet her voice, she stopped talking about her vision and put it on the back burner. When we dove deeper, this experience of not feeling heard was very familiar in her childhood. Her hives, presenting as red and inflamed welts was itching to be seen, heard and held. How does this land with you? Sometimes You Just Have to Go On and Do Your “Thing” ??? Inspired by a thought from Ryan Holiday, I’ve been reflecting on the different kinds of challenges we face every day. There’s a difference between the tough but ordinary moments—like working a 12-hour shift, standing in front of a class all day, explaining why the budget needs to be cut, making another sales call, or helping a colleague find the latest version of a report. ?? And then there are the real gut-wrenching moments: When your beloved pet needs a €2000 surgery. When your first Mother’s Day after your own mother’s passing is filled with radio ads about where you should be taking her. ?? When you’re celebrating a colleague’s baby shower, knowing your own pregnancy ended in a miscarriage not long after you found out. (And not for the first time.) In both cases, whether it’s a routine task or a deeply personal hardship, sometimes you just have to go on and do your thing—because life requires it. Deadlines must be met, promises kept, food put on the table. But here’s the thing: Remember that the person across from you, or on the other side of that phone call, could be dealing with their own “thing,” too. That “no” you received might not be personal—it could be the result of something much bigger going on in their world. ?? So, when the going gets tough, practice kindness and patience—with yourself, and with others. We’re all doing the best we can, one step at a time. Have you ever had to push through and "just do your thing" in a difficult moment? Share your thoughts or experiences below! ?? #Resilience #WorkplaceWellness #Empathy #MentalHealth #KindnessMatters
