Why are we celebrating #WorldOceansDay on The Underline? ???? Even though we are not directly on the ocean, The Underline begins at the River Room, which is located on the Miami River. From there, you might even catch a glimpse of our local friend, the manatee! The Miami River connects to Biscayne Bay, making it crucial to keep the river healthy for the animals that call it home and for the bay it feeds into. Our efforts to preserve the Miami River ultimately impact the health of our oceans. How do we support our oceans? One significant way we can support the ocean at The Underline is by using our trash and recycling receptacles. Proper disposal of garbage and recyclables ensures they do not end up in the river and, eventually, the ocean. Additionally, many natural features on The Underline help maintain the health of our waterways. This includes bioswales that filter and manage stormwater before runoff with debris ends up in the Miami River. This filtered water supports our native environment, recharges groundwater, and helps create a greener Miami. At the America the Beautiful for All Coalition "New Era, New Leaders" conference in September, I led a discussion on "Shifting the movement: Tools to facilitate values-first conservation when power dynamics make it hard." This day is also a powerful reminder of the vital connection between Indigenous peoples and the environment, particularly in the stewardship of our most precious resource: clean water. Indigenous communities have long been guardians of the land and water, advocating for sustainable practices that honor and protect our natural resources. Clean water is essential for life, and its preservation is critical for both the environment and the health of future generations. Let’s celebrate by supporting Indigenous-led initiatives that focus on water protection, advocating for sustainable practices, and amplifying Indigenous voices in environmental conservation. In anticipation of this Earth Day, we want to share some insights from our previous beach clean-up, where we asked our employees the following questions: ?? What motivated you to be here today for this beach clean-up? ?? What is one action, big or small, personal or professional, that you are doing to improve the health of our planet? By partnering with The Surfrider Foundation in 2023, the team collected over 200 pounds of trash along the Santa Ana River Jetty. This year, the team will be cleaning up our beaches again, splitting up between Seal Beach and Carlsbad.
