Leadership Development: A Phenomenological Inquiry Leadership development remains an elusive concept, with no universally accepted methodology. Diane Lange’s research delves into the experiences that shape the leadership abilities of individuals who have held senior roles for over a decade. The study’s guiding question seeks to understand how these leaders interpret their developmental journeys. #leadership Through her interpretive phenomenological analysis, Lange identifies several key themes. Firstly, a passion for one’s field is deemed essential for leadership success. This passion often stems from significant life experiences, including childhood events, overcoming hardships, and interactions with influential figures. These foundational experiences are pivotal in shaping an individual’s approach to leadership. Another critical aspect of leadership development highlighted in the study is the role of progressive work experiences and personal development activities. These experiences contribute significantly to honing leadership skills. Interestingly, the study reveals an unexpected theme: a lack of leadership identity among most participants. This finding suggests that despite their positions and experiences, some leaders do not strongly identify with being a leader. Lange’s research contributes valuable insights into the strategies and methods used for leadership development. It emphasizes the importance of personal passion, life experiences, and continuous professional growth in cultivating effective leaders. Leaders, could we redirect attention inwards as we seek to grow? ?? Our world feels like an overwhelming place to lead positive change at the moment. ?? But lead we must. I believe - strongly - that a shift towards deeper, richer, inner work might be where our greatest growth lies. ?? I meet so many awesome leaders who mostly look outwards. Outwards we see: ?? Problems to solve. ??Sadness and injustice. ?? Broken institutions or systems. You will have your own favourite places to look for solutions outside yourself too: ?? MORE research, evidence or engagement. ?? Good practice. ? New reforms or structures. ?? A theory or perspective or framework. (My fav!) ?? People who talk or write - often really well - who *might* have a shortcut(s). (They don't!) I get it: as humans we love to look at ANYTHING but ourselves. ?? The truth is that looking at ourselves is REALLY HARD. So we avoid it. But I have seen the HUGE impact when leaders shift attention inwards. On leadership programmes and in coaching. During project workshops and events where I have had the privilege to hold space for 1000s of awesome leaders like you over 2 decades. And recently, my own inner work has transformed me. ?? Turning inwards can help you: ?? Observe, more honestly, how you operate and show up. ?? Re-connect with your own special values and purpose. ?? Harness your unique power, authority and agency. The path will become clearer, action more certain, and significant change WILL happen. Best of all this development work is: Free. Accessible. And the returns are potentially life and world changing. If you want to start, or dive deeper, I'd suggest you: ?Identify questions about yourself as a leader you are drawn to explore. ? Dedicate as little as 5 minutes a week to explore these Qs: journalling is great! Talking out loud to a colleague, friend or loved one works too. ?? ?? ?? Don't avoid the tricky stuff! This is where the learning is. ?? Follow your curiosity. Again, this is where the learning is. And it's so fun. ?Embrace the journey! You don't know what you'll find. And the real learning won't show straight away. This means you are doing it right. ?? I am going to share some of my favourite ideas on the deeper work of leadership on here. If you have priorities you want me to cover please let me know! ??♂? And for the avoidance of doubt: these posts are 100% Tara. That is probably obvious to all of you who know me. ?? I do appreciate that might not be everyone's idea of a good thing. But I reckon if you want guidance from AI, you can do that without me getting in your way. ?? Maxwell With the holiday season just around the corner, I’ve been reflecting on this quote from John Maxwell, and it couldn’t be more fitting. As a leader, I believe this time of year serves as a great reminder that leadership is about service—about lifting others up and empowering those around us, not about personal gain. For me, leadership has always been about people first. It’s not about the titles or accolades, but about the impact I can have on the teams and individuals I’m fortunate enough to work with. When we lead with the intention to serve, especially during this season of gratitude and giving, we create environments where people feel valued, appreciated, and motivated to bring their best selves forward. As the year winds down and we prepare for the holidays, I’m taking time to reflect on how I’ve led and served others throughout the year. Have I helped others grow? Have I used my influence to create a positive impact? For me, leadership means showing up for others, not just when things are easy, but especially when they need guidance and support. And the holiday season is the perfect time to reaffirm that commitment. For those who don’t know my background, I’ve spent years dedicated to fostering leadership that puts people first.
