?? Hope you had a scary and fun Halloween, LinkedIn! ?? Yesterday, I dressed up as Waldo—the classic character who’s always hiding in plain sight. ???♂? It got me thinking ?? ?? Isn’t it funny? Sometimes, it can feel like playing workplace politics is just like finding Waldo… hard to see, hard to call out, but definitely there. ?? Have you ever felt like you’re doing great work but getting lost in the crowd, like a Waldo among the waves of red and white stripes? When office politics come into play, it can sometimes feel like standing out for the right reasons is nearly impossible. Here are a few ways to stay true to yourself and stand out, even among the politics: ?? Brag and Tag: Learned this from Alison Fragale, she wrote an amazing book (I highly recommend it!) And when you are talking about your work talk about it with pride. Plus mention other people who helped with your work. Share the glory. Everyone wins. ?? Value Others: Don't wait for someone to value you. Take the initiative and value others. When you speak up and appreciate others contributions you are modeling it for others and you will find other people will value you! ?? Appreciate Your Own Authenticity: Be you! That is your only competitive advantage. You can't be other people you can only be you? People notice realness! Let’s all work be “findable” for the right reasons. So here’s the question: ?? Today, 15 October, the world celebrates ?? International White Cane Day ?? This amazing device symbolises independence, freedom and safety for so many people who are blind or have low vision. For me personally, it’s been two years since I made the decision to acquire my trusted white cane, Audrey ?? Sadly, there is still a stigma attached to having a white cane. The world is changing but for many people with low vision who appear fully sighted, like myself, getting to that point is not an easy road to travel. I was so worried how people would react and think of me – colleagues at current workplaces and future work prospects. I knew my family and friends would be supportive but what about the broader community? I had to get to a certain point, a critical mass. Mine was being hit by a car but luckily I wasn’t seriously hurt. That was my lightbulb moment! Acquiring Audrey and learning how to use her with the incredible support and patience of Vision Australia’s orientation & mobility trainers helped me to change my life and my attitude. My white cane helped me to transform my outlook from feeling nervous and forever apologising for bumping into people, day and night, to feeling confident, strong, proud and in control of my circumstances. It’s a shame though it had to come to that. From my experience, I believe we must strive to promote #inclusion to bring optimal awareness to the benefits of using a white cane so people feel comfortable and safe in workplaces, educational institutions, small & large businesses, and the broader global community. My mission is to help change the narrative. Some people have the stereotypical image and view that all people with white canes are totally #blind. White canes definitely help people that are totally blind to navigate their worlds and build their confidence and independence to feel empowered. BUT they also help people with low vision to feel the same. Many times people are shocked when they realise I can see them when they approach me. We must change the narrative! How do we do this? By having in the #media more inspiring people with white canes sharing their stories and being part of the storytelling - in #movies, in #theatre, in #print and on #TV. Role models who are positive, intelligent, uplifting and creative. In this way ordinary people from all walks of life, the young and the young-at-heart, with low vision may be encouraged to live extraordinary lives and feel inspired to follow their passions, hopes and dreams so they may thrive and shine ?????? It's marching band season and this is a picture of my kids' band performing. I am so proud of all these kids and the resiliency they demonstrate when the show does not go according to plan (even with heartbreaking results). Sometimes the music will tear - which means one half (or part) of the band is out of sync with the other part of the band. Is your employer brand out of sync with the company brand? Is your HR function aligned to the business purpose and values? Do your business leaders align the customer experience with the employee experience? In theory you should have one brand and it should be the same for your customers and your employees. If it isn't and is skewed to serve your customers at the expense of your employees then your insides do not match your outsides. Clutching your pearls and pointing fingers at the employees will not help. A good marching band will hear the tear and make a correction on the field by working together. Can your organization do the same? And if not - why is that? This past weekend my kids' marching band had heartbreaking results due to what amounted to a "black swan" event for them. They were excellent in the areas they could control. Now they are future focused on the final competition for the season, learning from the past and adapting, while living their mission, values and vision. You’ve got to send in auditions, build relationships, invoice clients and get things done. BUT, we have a tendency to be all gas and no brakes when it comes to our careers.
