This National Infertility Awareness Week (NIAW), we at Cervivor, Inc. are embracing the theme “Leave Your Mark” with a focus that is close to our hearts: the intersection of infertility and cervical cancer. From April 21-27, we unite under this banner, not only to raise awareness about infertility issues across the board but also to shed light on the specific challenges faced by those in the cervical cancer community. Cervical cancer and its treatments often pose significant challenges to fertility, a fact that many of our community members know all too well. Treatments such as chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery can impact fertility, sometimes temporarily, and in many cases, permanently. This adds an additional layer of emotional and physical complexity to the cancer journey. Today is the start of International Brain Tumour Awareness Week 2024 I will be doing a short 2 min read every day some optical related, others non-optical related. Sat 26th October (non-optical) Brain Tumours in the UK are the biggest cancer killer in children and adults under the age of 40yrs. Over 12,000 a year are diagnosed, including 500 children and young people. with a brain tumour in the Uk. Roughly equating to 33 per day. More than any other cancer, brain tumours can have lasting and life-altering physical, cognitive and psychological impacts on a patients life. Unfortunately survivor rates are not getting any better in recent years, while survival rates for other cancers have been significantly improved. Brain Tumours reduce life expectancy by on average 27 years- the highest of any cancer. Just 12% of adults surviice for 5 years after diagnosis, in comparison to 70% of breast cancer and over 40% of leukaemia patients. Over ￡700M is spent on cancer research in the UK yet less than 3% is spent on brain tumours. The impact on life: Over 55%: People with a brain tumour who have to give up their driving licence and lose their independance Over 80%: People have to give up their leisure activities they previously enjoyed Over 25%: Experience seizures as a result of their treatment or the tumour itself, leading to anxiety, fear and risk of being alone which can limit their everyday life. Meet Laveena. Laveena - pictured here with her daughter, Giselle (L) and husband Jonathan (R) - was treated for Oral Cancer in 2014 after noticing an ulcer under her tongue. "My GP initially thought the ulcer was an infection, but I decided to get a second opinion from my Dentist who immediately sent me to an Oral Surgeon and I was diagnosed with tongue cancer. I was in my early 50s and did not smoke or drink so it was a complete surprise to be diagnosed with a cancer in my mouth." Laveena had surgery to remove part of her tongue as well as the entire floor of her mouth and lower jaw as well as her teeth. Over time, with the support from her multidisciplinary team and family Laveena learnt to speak and eat again, despite ongoing challenges as a result of her surgery. In the appendix cancer world, MOAS stands for "Mother Of All Surgeries." We like to think MOAS is short for "Minus One Appendix, Silly!" Honestly, the MOAS is no joke. The 10-to-15-hours-long surgery involves opening the belly from sternum to just below the belly button - it's called a laparatomy. The surgical oncologist then examines, by hand, every organ and surface for the sight and feel of cancer tumor. When found, he cuts away whatever tissue is diseased. This process is called ctyoreductive surgery (CRS). Every patient is different; some patients experience extensive organ removal, others might have just the standard 4-5 organs taken out. Either way, it's an invasive surgery, but it remains the Gold Standard of Care for appendix cancer at this time. ??Prostate Cancer - my BEST-NEXT-HELP? ??Prostate cancer affects 1 in 8 men, and the risk is higher if you’re over 50, black, or have a family history. ??Three years ago, a routine PSA blood test revealed prostate cancer. Thankfully, it was caught early, but it meant I had to undergo surgery to remove my prostate. ?? BEST - My latest 6-monthly blood test came back clear. ? Today is the last day of International Brain Tumour Awareness Week (#IBTA) It's a difficult topic for me to speak or write about, as someone who has been very closely and personally affected by brain tumours. In March of 2021, my best friend of 13 years was diagnosed with a malicious, inoperable stage IV brain tumour. She was 22. The only symptoms she'd had until then were infrequent headaches, until one day she went cross-eyed and her vision blurred one day along with severe headaches. Most people with Glioblastomas are given about 12 to 18 months after diagnosis. She beat that expectancy by about 9 months. She had just turned 24 years old a couple of months ago. It's been 16 months now since I lost her. The impact this has had on me is indescribable and has no place here. What I will say is that during all of it, as one of the people closest to her, I felt incredibly helpless. It feels one of the only things I can do is to keep talking about it and bring attention to it. Brain tumours can affect anyone. Even otherwise healthy, 22-year-olds. I wish we'd known earlier, so that now, there might be a chance she'd still be around. Please make sure if you have a family history of cancer - any cancer - to get regular check-ups. ‘’My name is Eoghan Gubbins-Cloney. My journey with cancer began on 3rd October 1997 when, at just sixteen months old, I was diagnosed with Medulloblastoma; a brain tumour associated with the Cerebellum (base of brain). My symptoms were not indicative of a brain tumour, my GP initially misdiagnosed me as having Cerebral Palsy, a condition which would account for the loss of control in my lower limbs but not projectile vomiting which I was also experiencing. My mom and grandmother, not completely satisfied with the Cerebral Palsy diagnosis, brought me to Cork University Hospital for a specialist second opinion. I was administered a CT scan which initially showed nothing out of the ordinary. Following this, I was given contrast before another CT scan was performed. Contrast is a dye used in CT scans to assist radiologists in distinguishing different structures in the body. With the aid of contrast, the radiologists and doctors were able to identify a golf ball-sized tumour attached to my brain stem under the Cerebellum and two metastases that had travelled to the spine. The outlook was not good. The doctors recommended that I should be taken home, made as comfortable as possible and enjoy whatever time I had left; they estimated a maximum of three weeks. A surgeon at Cork University Hospital agreed to carry out an excision and remove the tumour, however there was no guarantee I would survive the surgery. Surgery such as this was not normally carried out on anyone under the age of two and my surgeon had never before operated on anyone as young as sixteen months for this brain tumour. However, thankfully, the surgery was a success. What followed was a course of Chemotherapy, both intravenous (3 months) and oral (5 months, administered every day by my mom)''.
