It's a new day, let’s focus on the crucial work of environmental justice. At ISEC Kenya, we believe that a sustainable future is not only about protecting the planet, but also ensuring that every community has equal access to clean air, water, and a healthy environment. Environmental justice means addressing the inequalities that leave some communities more vulnerable to climate change and pollution. Let’s continue advocating for a fairer, greener world for all. Learn more about our mission at iseckenya.org or contact us at [email protected] together, we can bring justice to our planet and its people. #iseckenya #environmentaljustice #happyWednesday

So much, so suddenly. Flooding seems to be happening to so many places (and, as always, messing things up for vulnerable #globalsouth communities the most) around the world to the point that it seems so loud: Yemen, Brazil, and even places in the #globalnorth like Germany and Italy. More than likely, here in #thebahamas there will be something since #hurricaneseason kicks off soon. I can't help but say that acts of colonialism like the #ecocide resulting from Israel's genocide on the Palestinian people and the global trend of keeping #globalsouth communities impoverished so that climate impact may continue to leave them in an economically exploitable position must be huge factors in what's going on, and these are not normal or acceptable. #humanrightsisclimatejustice #climatecrisis
??????“Sea-level rise is already creating a huge disaster in Colombia. We are losing beaches, livelihoods of people, sources of clean water in the coastal areas, and we are also losing heritage.” This week we are at the SIDS4 conference in Antigua, talking to people about their takeaways from the conference and what they take with them to the Sea-Level Rise Summit on 25 September in New York City during UNGA79. Listen to our interview with the Minister of Environment & Sustainable Development of Colombia, Susana Muhamad, about why she thinks sea-level rise is a pressing issue.

I spent the better part of last week attending a workshop on how to involve women in conservation and environment projects in arid and semi-arid areas courtesy of IUCN Eastern and Southern Africa FAO, National Environment Management Authority among many other entities. Ensuring all are involved is crucial in Kenya, considering 80 per cent of Kenya's land area is classified as arid and semi-arid, covering 29 counties. It is home to about 16 million people. And as Kenya grapples with frequent droughts, women who produce 60-80% of the food have been severely affected and turn to environmentally harmful activities like charcoal burning. This has worsened the climate issue, and alternative ways of survival need to be devised. Mindsets need to be changed in especially the largely pastoralist communities where overgrazing is common and human-wildlife conflicts on the rise. In Kenya, National Environment Management Authority is implementing the 4-year-old sustainable project in Kajiado and Narok counties. Here is my article on the issue. https://lnkd.in/dZTRkEBj

In Papua New Guinea, integrating gender equality into marine conservation efforts holds immense potential for both the health of the ocean and the well-being of women. By recognizing the distinct roles women play in coastal communities, conservation projects can empower them. This can involve involving women in decision-making processes, creating alternative income opportunities like sustainable fishing practices or eco-tourism ventures, and promoting their participation in monitoring marine ecosystems. These efforts can lead to improved livelihoods for women, greater control over their resources, and ultimately, a more invested and effective approach to protecting Papua New Guinea's precious marine environment. #sdg5 #genderequality #wee #elsiesimeon
#DidYouKnow that Kimbe Bay is home to some of the most biodiverse coral reefs on the planet? Through its 'Gutpela Solwara, Gutpela Bisnis' programme, UNDP aims to preserve this unique marine biodiversity by strengthening West New Britain's sustainable #BlueEconomy ?? . In 2024, the programme will launch a Blue Economy Enterprise Incubation Facility in the province, which will provide support to local blue and women-led medium-, small-, and micro-sized enterprises. One of the businesses supported by the programme is Connas Trading, a family-owned fishing enterprise run by Annas and Connie Vitata. Together, this power couple seeks to protect local marine life by mainstreaming sustainable fishing practices among the local communities ?? . I am honored to share that my article, “Community-led Actions in Water Management on Greek Islands: The Case of Crete”, developed during my assignment as a United Nations Volunteer, has been published. The article has been prepared as part of the report "Towards Circular: Analysis of the Coastal Areas of Greece, Italy and Spain" by Think Tank AlterContacts, an NGO in Special Consultative Status with ECOSOC. The report, launched during the European Sustainable Development Week 2024, highlights key pathways to a circular economy, focusing on sustainable practices in Mediterranean coastal regions. Read the full article here:?https://lnkd.in/e8T_tQsj This paper examines the community-led water management initiatives in the Decentralized Administration of Crete, amidst ongoing governmental e?orts to privatize water management to a foreign company. It highlights local reactions and the role locals play in managing their resources, particularly the Water Supply and Sewerage Companies (TOEB). Furthermore, the bene?ts of collective wealth building, community participation, and solidarity economy for sustainable development are presented. Lastly, recommendations on implementing Collective Wealth Building initiatives in the region of Crete are outlined. #esdw2024 #towardscircular #AlterContacts #SustainableDevelopment #CircularEconomy #UNVolunteers #EuropeanSDWeek2024 #ClimateAction #Coastal #SDG

The OS network extends a whale of love to all of South Africa this Human Rights Day. ?????????? In October 2021, the Human Rights Council recognized the human right to a healthy environment, a move that was supported by the UN the following year in July. According to the UN, the right to a clean, healthy, and sustainable, environment is not only essential to the enjoyment of all human rights, but it's also as an essential precursor to achieving Sustainable Development Goals. Section 24 of South Africa's constitution (Act 108 of 1996) also acknowledges this right, and states that everyone has the right to: ? an environment which is not harmful to their health or well-being ? have the environment protected for the benefit of present and future generations through reasonable legislative and other measures that: ? prevent pollution and ecological degradation ? promote conservation ? secure ecologically sustainable development and use of natural resources, while promoting justifiable economic and social development. There is no universal definition of this right, although it does tend to include the right to clean air, a safe and stable climate, access to safe water and adequate sanitation, healthy and sustainably produced food, non-toxic environments in which to live, work, study and play, healthy biodiversity and ecosystems, access to information, the right to participate in decision-making, and access to justice and effective remedies, including the secure exercise of these rights free from reprisals and retaliation. Realizing the right to a healthy environment requires cooperation that goes beyond all borders when it comes to taking positive action for the environment, and the OS network stands stands in firm support of this cooperation. #humanrightsday #cleanenvrionments #oceanstewardssa #wildtrustyouth Visit these sources for more info: https://lnkd.in/eKnH-uxx https://lnkd.in/ep8iTT-M

Did you know that Rwanda, often hailed as one of the cleanest countries in Africa, conducts a nationwide cleanup dubbed "Umuganda" every last Saturday of the month? ???? It's a brilliant initiative aimed at ensuring the cleanliness and sustainability of their beautiful nation. As an environmentalist, I find this approach not only noble but also incredibly sustainable. Imagine if every country adopted a similar practice as part of our journey towards achieving net zero emissions. Our small united actions will lead to huge and evident impacts, shaping a greener and more sustainable future for generations to come.???? It's time for us, environmentalists, climate change activists, and SDG champions, to unite and use our voices to protect and restore our environment. ???? To address a critical issue concerning our environment, we recently sat down for an insightful conversation with Hon. Mary Adikwu, a passionate environmental activist ?? who is spearheading a nationwide tree-planting campaign ??. Her personal lifestyle perfectly aligns with her advocacy, as she actively works to preserve and restore nature. Hon. Adikwu’s message is clear: if we are to protect our future, we must start with protecting our environment today ??. Historically, Africans have always shown deep respect for the land, with tree planting being a fundamental part of our culture. Trees were not just sources of shade or food; they were sacred symbols of life, deeply embedded in our traditions and practices ??. However, with the wave of modernization and rapid urban development, this culture of environmental preservation has begun to fade. More trees are being cut down, making way for buildings, roads, and other infrastructure—often at the expense of our ecological balance ?????. Hon. Adikwu believes it's high time we reconnect with our roots by incorporating sustainable practices into our development plans ??. It’s not enough to focus on short-term progress; we must think about the long-term health of our planet ??. Preserving our trees and nurturing green spaces must be seen as essential to creating a sustainable future for Africa. By balancing development with conservation, we can ensure that both nature and human advancement thrive side by side ??. This serves as a reminder that protecting our environment is not only a necessity but also a responsibility we owe to future generations ??. #SustainableAfrica #EnvironmentalConservation #TreePlanting #GreenFuture #ProtectOurPlanet #EcoFriendlyDevelopment #AfricansForTheEnvironment #SustainabilityMatters #PreserveNature #EcoWarriors #GreenAfrica

Following the insightful discussions at the recent #AfricaForumBerlin, I took the opportunity to dive deeper into the roles that Europe and?Africa must play in addressing the #globalconservation and #biodiversity crises in my latest op-ed for the German outlet taz. As highlighted during the forum, the urgency of stronger, equitable partnerships between our continents. Africa’s rich biodiversity is not only a local treasure but a global asset, and to protect it, we must shift the traditional conservation narrative. Europe has a pivotal role to play in supporting African-led initiatives that prioritize sustainable development, local leadership, and community-driven solutions. Our shared future depends on how well we work together to achieve a balance between economic growth and environmental stewardship. Conservation is no longer about protectionism; it’s about co-creating pathways for both continents that foster sustainable development. Europe must go beyond simply funding projects—it’s time to engage with Africa’s leaders and communities to craft solutions together. I invite you to read the full op-ed to explore these ideas further.
