With only 46 days until the start of hurricane season, it's crucial for communities to assess their preparedness for recovery. Here are a few considerations. When was the last time you reviewed your disaster pay policy? It's vital to ensure that your personnel are fairly compensated for their hard work during disaster response efforts. Additionally, consider whether your community will allow for the placement of towable temporary housing units (FEMA Trailers). If so, will there be charges for building permits for these installations? Do you have enough building inspectors to manage this surge in activity? Starting conversations with utility providers to understand their specifications and requirements is essential for seamless recovery efforts. Collier County resumed government operations and services for the public Friday, two days after Hurricane Milton caused shutdowns, and Collier Area Transit buses began running again. Florida Power & Light reported shortly before 1 p.m. Friday that 68,340 homes and businesses are still without power, while it restored electricity to 115,570 after 183,910 were affected out of 236,400 customers. FPL employees and contractors are working to restore service to city and county residents, but are prioritizing emergency situations, downed power lines, FPL facilities and substations, critical institutions, such as hospitals and emergency service stations, and grids with the highest population. Our thoughts go out to everyone who has been impacted by Hurricane Helene and Hurricane Milton, who have ravaged the Southeast of the U.S. The rebuilding needs, which are still being determined, will be enormous. The Category 4 storm was the worst hurricane to strike the U.S mainland since Katrina in 2005. North Carolina, Tennessee, Georgia South Carolina, Virginia and Florida suffered the most, as their DOTs are now assessing the damage to their infrastructure. Forecasting company AccuWeather set forth an estimate of $225-$250 billion will be needed for repairs. The federal government has already sent $100 million to repair and reopen roads and bridges damaged by Helene in western North Carolina, however where the remaining funding needed will come from remains to be chosen. Some important infrastructure that have been heavily hit consist of: - I-40 highway connecting western North Carolina and eastern Tennessee. - CSX tracks and bridges in the Carolinas. - 6 million individuals have lost power across 10 states due to damaged power grids. Helene and Milton serve as a reminder of how critical it is that modern construction norms and standards be widely adopted.
