Four months ago, I started my Co-op journey at CIBC as a Test Analyst and Level I Co-op Student. At the time, I had differing thoughts; this was an exciting new opportunity to engage in the workforce and apply my design skills to the real world. However, as a biomedical engineering student, I had limited experience with computer sciences and would need to leverage my adaptability to make the most of my situation. As part of a team of co-op students, I developed Extract, Transform, Load (ETL) scripts to move data for use in a metrics dashboard for tests performed by our Quality Assurance team; an exciting new project with plenty of technical challenges. Luckily, CIBC allows students to learn and grow, with plenty of room for improvement and mentorship. I reached out to colleagues who clarified foreign concepts with grace and patience. In particular, I would love to thank Sivakumar Ganesan and Rahul Sobti for their amazing mentorship and patience. In my off time, I explored on my own to familiarize myself and practice based on their suggestions. As time passed, I recognized patterns and examples from schoolwork. I made connections from classroom concepts and looked back at old projects for inspiration in my latest endeavor. Ultimately, I no longer had to decipher technical jargon and catch up with others; instead, I could contribute my ideas and support my team. For my efforts, I was nominated to the CIBC SPARK program for student leadership, a reminder of how far I had come from day one. Now, over a hundred days later, I listed some things I learned in my co-op journey as part of a school assignment. From my new technical skills in back-end development, writing Python scripts, and working with industry tools like Github and Jira, to my new understanding of how professionalism, accountability, and structure keep companies moving in perfect step, I’m excited to see how I can apply my knowledge to future endeavors. What did I learn? I suppose we’ll have to see because I certainly will be applying my skills to my next opportunity.
