Anthony Bourdain was notoriously sour on brunch, and Mother's Day has unique challenges. In the words of Shawn P. Walchef (of Cali BBQ Media), Mother’s Day presents “an operational challenge. It’s the busiest day of the year and also the day guests have the highest expectations." According to the National Restaurant Association, 56% of consumers plan to dine out or take out food on Sunday, representing the potential for a huge bump in revenue, as well as operational and logistical challenges (nightmares?) that come with the territory. Beyond earnings, the winfall the holiday brings may be in all the data generated from new and returning customers. Jynessa M., VP of Data & Insights at Fishbowl, says three pieces of information are enough to build robust guest profiles. If you know a person's Age, Marital Status and Presence of Children, you have enough data to sustain customer engagement over time (using ‘lifestage’ segmentation that's built into our GRM, for example). Sunday obviously represents the opportunity to understand if a customer has kids. It's also a chance to capture seating and dining preferences, preferred method for making a reservatons, transactional data and contact information. Mother's Day is also a chance to foster ongoing relationships with customers. For example, restaurants might consider a bounce-back campaign, where diners who visit on Mother's Day receive complientary appetizers or a delivery discount on Father's Day. Or, guests who come for brunch might be offered a reason to come back within a month’s time for lunch or dinner. As an operator, be creative in how you entice this captive audience to return for future visits.
