This new study shows the United States in in a class of its, with dramatically lower health care access and health outcomes than other industrialized nations, even though healthcare spending is much higher than these other countries. This reveals flaws in our system, especially inequity. In order to improve these statistics, we need to focus on health care coverage and access, and also address other determinants of health which contribute to disparate outcomes between high- and low- income individuals. https://lnkd.in/e9NCxeUg #Healthcare #HealthSpending #Hygieia #Inequity

It’s official. Australia has one of the best healthcare systems in the world. Yet, we performed poorly in equity and access to care. What can we do to improve this? “Australia, the top performer overall in this report, faired quite poorly when it came to access to care. Roughly half of Australian patients who do not choose to purchase voluntary health insurance may have to wait longer to receive services.?Affordability is also a noted problem, although new billing incentives have led to improvement in recent years…?When we expanded the definition of equity to encompass geography and gender…?Australia fell to sixth… Australia and New Zealand’s poor performance for rural versus nonrural respondents contributed to their lower rankings.” Read the full report here:?https://lnkd.in/gW42ynGR

I saw a post yesterday that was written for an American Medical audience. The gist of it was that Primary Care organisations in the US should get tougher with chasing patients who don’t pay their Co-Pay. I don’t need to go into detail but it served as a stark reminder of the realities of not having Universal Healthcare in Place. Whether that be a model like the NHS or a more European style social insurance model. We all recognise that the NHS has some very serious challenges but we should also remind ourselves of the scale of care it is required to offer and the work that dedicated and talented staff do to deliver that care. Some snapshots: Total Patient contacts (NHS England) in 23/24 stood at 600 Million (or 1.643 Million a day) - March 2024: GP practices delivered 30 Million appointments. A 24% increase since January 2020. - May 2024 NHS 111 handled 1.8 Million Calls Full details are below. https://lnkd.in/eMrwraV6 We have to deal with successive years of a lack of Capital Investment and we have much work to do to address demand and to improve outcomes. These problems are not unique to the U.K. but we remain blessed that we are not having to worry about chasing non-payers or dealing with the bureaucracy associated with health insurance. The latest comparitor report from the Commonwealth Fund makes for interesting reading. https://lnkd.in/ewz6Pyz9

The recent article from STAT sheds light on a critical issue in healthcare: traditional cost-effectiveness analyses may inadvertently worsen health disparities. These analyses often fail to consider the specific needs of marginalized communities, resulting in unequal access to healthcare. At Activate Care, we understand the importance of fair health solutions and are dedicated to backing innovative approaches that prioritize inclusivity and fairness in healthcare decision-making. By incorporating social determinants of health into CEAs, we can promote a more just healthcare system for everyone. #HealthEquity #CostEffectiveness #SocialDeterminants https://hubs.la/Q02KP42x0
