Galveston Island Beach Patrol is a major part of the Galveston Park Board’s operations. Soon, the Park Board will be adding a new advisory committee to help support this important department. Beach Patrol Chief Peter Davis writes for The Galveston County Daily News about why this new volunteer group of citizens will be so vital. Read on below. ** By Peter Davis, Beach Patrol Chief Something new is brewing at the Park Board of Trustees that has potential to have a lasting and positive impact for the increasing number of beach users the island sees each year. We are about to launch a Beach Patrol Advisory Committee. The committee’s mission is to support the park board on issues related to the safety and security of beach patrons, including long-term planning, budgeting, staffing levels, funding and safety equipment. If you’re a regular reader of this column, you likely have a feel for the myriad of services Beach Patrol offers in addition to direct guarding of 32 miles of beach. To stretch our resources to address the needs of one of the country’s busiest beaches, we augment the core program with volunteer programs, a large day camp, a beach park security program, disaster response, 24/7/365 “on call” program, a large water safety educational program, and numerous collaborations and partnerships that enhance beach safety. But even with all of this, keeping the beaches safe and the drowning fatality rate low is an ongoing challenge. And with increasing use on the West End, the stretch between Stewart Beach and East Beach, Babe’s Beach, and the entire beach during what was formerly known as the “cold season,” looking at how to meet these trends is critical to our moral imperative and economic health as a tourist destination. The advisory committee will take direction from the park board and the annual work plans authorized by the board to develop solutions, recommendations, insight, metrics, analysis and direction on issues related to the safety and security of people who use Galveston’s beaches. The committee’s meetings, recommendations and reports will be open to the public, with all written recommendations and findings sent to the board chairman for consideration by the board. This committee is to be comprised of 13 individuals elected by the board of trustees, including one representative each from local law enforcement, fire, EMS, and the Hotel and Lodging Association. Joining them will be four citizens at large, one beach-related business representative, two representatives from volunteer organizations dealing with beaches, and two members of the Park Board of Trustees. A representative for the city of Galveston and several from the Beach Patrol shall serve as non-voting resource members. Historic sites need multiple types of people to make it successful. Yes, managerial, but also visitor services ( cash people), folks who live giving tours, background interp staff, and maintenance and support staff. While it'd be fabulous if everyone knew how to cover all the jobs, so folks can move between jobs if needed, you can't effectively provide exceptional visitor experience if you have so few staff that they are expected to cover all the jobs all the time. Watching these projects unfold is a reminder of the incredible intersection between human ingenuity and natural preservation. Beach renourishment is no small feat. It involves massive quantities of sand transported and meticulously placed to combat erosion, protect coastal ecosystems, and enhance the beach experience for everyone. With such large-scale operations, the presence of heavy equipment is inevitable—from bulldozers and excavators to large dump trucks carrying loads of fresh sand. Observing these machines at work can be impressive yet poses significant safety considerations. These projects are carefully managed, balancing the need for efficiency with stringent safety protocols to protect both the workers on site and the public enjoying the beach. Safety measures typically include clearly marked boundaries around work zones, trained flaggers who direct both vehicular and pedestrian traffic, and informative signage to keep the unsuspecting beachgoer well informed. From a personal perspective, understanding and respecting these safety boundaries is crucial. I make it a point to keep a safe distance, not just for my own safety, but also to ensure that the workers can do their job without additional concerns.
