On Sunday, I had the distinct opportunity to hang out with a selected group of Latino and Latina business owners at the Stanford University Graduate School of Business as part of their program with LBAN/Latino Business Action Network. On the stage, Manuel Oblitas of VND - vndx.com (self proclaimed hype man of LBAN) and Maria Jose Palacio of Progeny Coffee (fashion designer turned coffee entrepreneur) and I, shared our experience with the program. We discussed the challenges that we have faced as business owners trying to scale our companies in the times of the pandemic, accessing #capital and living our personal lives! This program is unlike any other in the country. These leaders are going to be attending online discussions, completing course work, while also running their businesses. Whether you are making empanadas, or driving diesel trucks, or creating the next big app or tech, this #community will be there when you need us. In nine weeks, these leaders will come back to the Stanford campus for their graduation and will become part of the LBAN alumni network, where more than one thousand of us will welcome them! So blooming proud and privileged to have a voice and be asked to contribute to University of Strathclyde x Strathclyde Inspire’s Entrepreneurial Strategy. I am so passionate about inclusive entrepreneurship (societies, schools, EVERYTHING!) and I will do whatever I can to give back to the communities that raise me up. Today’s consultation was followed by a Summer Networking event where founders, advisors, supporters, ecosystem builders, interdisciplinary roles across campus and, crucially, investors, came together. It’s becoming a bit of a habit, but myself and two other founders stood talking outside afterwards for a couple of hours. ????? I cannot tell you how important it is to start-ups/spin-outs/scale-ups, to create spaces where founders can learn from each other and embed entrepreneurial thinking and activity into each other’s behaviour and processes. This afternoon and this evening have been a huge injection of support and progress. Founders need the ecosystem to keep moving, to not go quiet on us, to keep momentum building and bridge the gaps with knowledge exchange. One attendee today, who I had never met before, spent his whole time introducing me to new people who can help me. So, my four takeaways from today are: 1. Speak to founders to understand what inclusion means to them. 2. Create space for founders to be together for free. 3. Open the next stage doors for early-stage founders by making introductions. 4. This session lead by Jean-Jacques Dordain with Guillaume de La Brosse, Head of Unit for Space innovation, Start-ups, Economics at DG Defence Industry and Space - European Commission, underscored the key role of startups bringing game-changing innovations and the importance of access to institutional contracts for these players. Thierry Breton made New Space a priority of his mandate. This is becoming reality, with Europe turning into a hub for space entrepreneurship.
