Today is World Down Syndrome Day and this year’s theme is End the Stereotypes. For people with Down syndrome and intellectual disabilities, stereotypes can stop them from being treated like other people. Our negative assumptions about people with Down syndrome can lead us to treat them in such a way that these assumptions become reality. Why not reverse our perspectives? If we have positive assumptions about people with Down syndrome, we'll give them more opportunities in their schools, workplaces, relationships and activities. Happy World Down Syndrome Day! ? Today is World Down Syndrome Day (#WDSD), a global awareness day that has been observed by the United Nations since 2012.? ? This day has personal significance to me and my family because my 7 year old son has Down syndrome. Just like any typical 7 year old, he loves anything by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler, is currently obsessed with Bluey (I mean, who isn't?!), and is proficient in the operation of any electronic device with a screen. ? Less typically, he has a learning disability, delayed speech and language, a reduced sense of risk and he is what is commonly referred to as a 'runner' - which can sometimes make life quite challenging. But isn't life sometimes challenging for the parent of any 7 year old? I wouldn't change a thing about him, he's funny and full of life and love, lives entirely in the moment, teaches me new things all the time and is never to be underestimated! ? This year's #WDSD theme is 'End the Stereotypes'. People with Down syndrome face discrimination in many aspects of their lives (access to inclusive education & training, healthcare and employment being just some), and much of this stems from outdated or just plain incorrect stereotypes that persist in many parts of society. ? If you haven't had the pleasure of knowing someone with Down syndrome, it might surprise you. It's called 'Assume that I can'. ? What an amazing message and really showcases how in every day life assumptions are made of those who are perceived as different.
