We wanted to share a quick video from the ribbon-cutting today at Shelby Commons in Minneapolis. We are so proud to partner with Project for Pride in Living (PPL) on the new affordable community with 46 units, including several units for residents facing housing insecurity and all affordable for those under 80% of area median income. Elfric Porte, Director of Communty Planning and Economic Development at City of Minneapolis, helmed the scissors today. Come back soon for more details and photos from today’s event. This our first property in Minnesota.

Understanding affordable housing solutions can be daunting, especially for those who have never faced housing stability issues. According to the San Antonio Report, the city is grappling with more than 95,000 cost-burdened households and a significant shortage of affordable homes. The SACRD team encourages you to educate yourself on San Antonio’s housing crisis and use your voice and expertise to advocate for policies that can improve the lives of our neighbors. We invite you to watch the "Everybody Needs a Home" documentary, which highlights the key intersections of the affordable housing crisis in San Antonio. https://lnkd.in/gz2gPRQN

Great insights were shared at the FOCUS St. Louis event! Former St. Louis Mayor Francis Slay, Former St. Louis County Council Member Colleen Wasinger, and Former President & CEO of Bi-State Development and Mayor of Chesterfield John Nations provided valuable nuggets on finding common ground through civil discourse. Here are some key takeaways from the event: 1. Building relationships is crucial to achieving success. 2. Working across party lines is necessary for progress. 3. Disagreements can be productive, as long as they are respectful. 4. Avoid seeking attention in a negative way. 5. Politics should be about the business of people, not outside agendas. 6. Our young people need more ways to connect and get involved. It was good to hear the discussion on how we can improve civil discourse in our community. Thank you to Yemi A. Akande-Bartsch, Ph.D and Jody Sowell Sowell for facilitating these important discussions. Let's continue to strive for civil discourse and finding common ground. #FOCUSStLouis #CivilDiscourse #CommunityDiscussions

Yesterday, Senator Anderson and Representative Weaver delivered a press conference advocating for funding for the Village of Bishop Hill. This is the same task I will be completing on April 17 at the Illinois Municipal League Lobby Day. Bishop Hill is a small town in Illinois that is designated as a state and national historic site due to its Swedish cultural significance. However, the town is failing.?Right now, the state provides them with an annual budget of $40,000, which isn't enough to repave roads, let alone have an administrative office. Many of their historical sites are in disrepair, and the Illinois DNR won't let the residents fix buildings or repair them themselves. This inspired my grandmother and I to develop a survey.?We reached out to all the small towns in Illinois with a population of under 250. Based on my conversations with town mayors, they have almost identical experiences. Due to a low population, they: - Cannot afford an administrative office, laptops, or internet connection - Cannot afford to pay their town employees - Cannot afford basic maintenance, like repairing roads, buildings, or cemeteries - Cannot afford to pay a grant writer to obtain additional funding for the aforementioned items - Run their towns based entirely on volunteer efforts This is not sustainable. While most of the towns under 250 people are not tourist destinations, they deserve a fighting chance. For many people, these are towns where they grew up, run a business/farm, or have family members. While they do not need to be prioritized to the extent of larger towns a more significant commercial draw, they need a base level of funding to sustain administrative duties for their residents. I will be advocating for common-sense, practical ways to reallocate existing funding toward providing the basics for small towns in Illinois. Please reach out if you want to know how to use our formula for other towns across the country. https://lnkd.in/gqxWDdZ9

Housing is a perfectly fine investment even when prices/rents aren't increasing, https://lnkd.in/gWe3s7i3 This is because asset prices are based on the net expected value of future cash flow (or expected value of avoided rents), and they adjust to that expected value of future cash flow. Markets where rents are expected to increase see prices well above what makes sense based on current rents and that upfront negative cash flow is balanced by the appreciation caused by increasing rents. "Treating something as an investment" doesn't magically make its price go up. Restricting the ability to increase quantity supplied in response to increases in demand does though. This diversion against "financialization" is misguided. If Coca-Cola stockholders managed to get all other soda producers outlawed we wouldn't be talking about how treating stocks as an investment was the cause of "unaffordable soda".
