The Nature Conservancy in Texas has worked to protect the state's freshwater ecosystems since 1964. Texas has 80,000 miles of rivers and streams and 31 aquifers supplying about 60% of our annual water usage. However, 75% of our rivers and major aquifers are in decline, and if no action is taken, the state could face $151 billion in annual economic losses by 2070. Currently, 60% of water consumption supports agriculture, leaving only 40% for energy, cities, and the environment. With increasing droughts and floods, it’s crucial to secure the future of our water. The Nature Conservancy in Texas has protected nearly 200 river miles and maintains 37 nature preserves covering 100,000 acres. Their focus includes advancing water research, strengthening groundwater management, and restoring river flow to support a sustainable water future for all Texans. As the fastest growing region in the UK, we recycle a lot of water – in fact, over a billion litres of sewage every day! But as the population continues to grow and our sewer networks are processing more human and domestic waste, we’re always looking for more natural solutions. Treatment wetlands are a key part of our vision for the future, following the successful launch of our flagship wetland in Ingoldisthorpe, Norfolk in 2019. Delivered in partnership with NORFOLK RIVERS TRUST, it was the first of its kind in England. Five years on, we took our CEO Mark Thurston to see how much has changed. Now operating as a natural treatment plant for millions of litres of water, these wetlands have become a beautiful habitat and a flourishing haven for wildlife ??? Currently under review, our 2025-2030 business plan, proposes a record investment of ￡4 billion to enhance the environment, which includes building more treatment wetlands across our region. The California Water Plan contains a massive wave of information, so DWR is summarizing the highlights for you in smaller “splashes”! ?? Today, we’re tackling supporting and learning from Tribal water and resource management practices. While California Native American Tribes have a long history of sustainable water and resource management practices, Tribal communities face water management challenges related to water rights, infrastructure development, engagement, and Tribal direct funding. To address these challenges and learn from Tribal water management practices, we are going to strengthen partnerships with California Native American Tribes and ensure that Tribes are included in planning and water resources decision-making processes. This includes collaborating with Tribes to incorporate Indigenous knowledge into California water policy, planning, and projects, and further understanding Tribal water quality, ecosystems, and access to water, to support Tribal lifeways including subsistence and cultural practices. An open comment to the FERC opposing the proposed Cuffs Run pumped storage: I strongly oppose the proposed pump storage project by York Energy Storage.?The Susquehanna River has endured excessive exploitation of its resources for?far too long. Downstream from the proposed project site lies a chain of?infrastructure, including the Conowingo Dam, Muddy Run Pumped Storage?Facility, Holtwood Dam, and Safe Harbor Dam. These installations have?collectively and irreversibly altered the Susquehanna River's ecosystem in?numerous detrimental ways. Dams disrupt the natural course and flow regime of rivers, leading to fluctuations?in water temperatures and oxygen levels, as well as altering sediment?transport patterns. Such disruptions profoundly affect the biological?diversity of rivers, fragmenting habitats and isolating fish and wildlife?populations. Unfortunately, the proposed pump storage project is poised to?inflict similar harm upon the Susquehanna River. As someone who frequently kayaks on the Susquehanna River, I am deeply?concerned about the potential deterioration of water quality and the?degradation of my recreational experience. Our focus should be on restoring?the Susquehanna River to its original state, prior to the imposition of these dams,?rather than perpetuating further departures from its natural condition. I encourage all readers of this comment to view Benjamin Henry Latrobe's 1802?Map of the Susquehanna River to envision the river's pristine beauty before?human intervention irreversibly altered its course. With respect to Coral Reefs around Hawaii...."That's a massive decline. So even with the big funding that we have to do coral reef restoration, some of the people leading this, Dr. Greg Asner, say some of those coral reefs are so degraded that we can't even rebuild on them."
