The NE HIMSS Women in HIT event last evening didn't disappoint. The topic this year was "Empowering Women & Diversity in Tech: Strategies for Career Advancement." Excellent panel comprised of Luz Frazier, MCLC, BCP, Dr. Claire E., Nicole Thyne, MHA, and Jess Doherty, moderated by Sue Schade. The two comments from that event that I wanted to highlight was "Network, network, network" and "Be Confident." I asked the question of the panel about their suggestions to help those looking to find a job (especially early careerists as there were many students in the room), and also what not to do. While every panelist had their own take on the question, the answers centered mostly around the importance of networking not only to find the job but to grow your career. The "Be Confident" comment was actually brought up a few times in the evening, not only for negotiating a raise or a promotion, but also as a problem that some of the panelists cautioned the audience to address when job seeking, the lack of confidence. Job seeking, whether it be as a new grad, someone that had recently been laid off, or if looking to find the next "right" role, is a task that many people find daunting and don't know how to effectively pursue. If you have the confidence and can project your value and you know what you want to do and can communicate this all effectively, create a plan that leverages networking, you will be far ahead of the pack. However, if one or some of these activities is causing stress or inaction, find people in your network that can help you overcome these obstacles and create that plan for success. Feeling valued, fulfilled, and rewarded for your impact – that’s what every professional woman wants. I remember a time when I wanted the same in my career. For the same rights, for the same opportunities

“Want to broaden your career opportunities? Make time and invest in building the networks with leaders who are willing to support you.” If the above is an advice to females, the next immediate question is, “How?”. I appreciate the below article from HBR calling out the challenges women often face when trying to build “high status networks”. I’ve been on both sides of the fine line - some have positioned me to move forward, whilst others have pulled me backward. Having personally tried and tested the ideas shared that led me to realize positive progress particularly through third-party reach and global network, I recommend to read through the article and consider how the suggestions will apply to you at the individual, group, and/or systemic level. Big or small steps, progress is progress. Take actions to invest in “high status networks” that will serve you well. In this process, stay true to your integrity. Don’t let the current system limit your worth and potential for creating next opportunities that we deserve ??????
