ICYMI: This year, Labrador was plagued with wildfires unseen in any previous season, which affects everything from food accessibility, to safety, and the number of evacuations that communities face. But what’s happening in Labrador isn’t an isolated event – increasing wildfires across the country means that we need to adapt and employ better mitigation strategies. One of those strategies is training more Guardians – the eyes, ears, and mukluks on the ground in remote communities – in wildfire mitigation and response. Read more on how the Indigenous Leadership Initiative is advocating for this work and the impact it can make. https://bit.ly/46Euy1n?

If there is anything I have become more aware of after Hurricane Helene forced us push back our plans for this originally scheduled summit last weekend, is that our communities in Florida (and the Southeast) are resilient -- more than we know. Make no mistake though, what the storm has done to some of our communities across the Southeast is devastating and frightening. And if anything, this is a reminder that climate change is REAL, and these storms are happening more frequently and stronger. How can we prepare our communities to be ready for the next one? As a team we had to come to a hard decision to postpone our event, and that wasn't easy. After months of planning and coordinating, it was certainly a tough choice. But ultimately the safety of our attendees and speakers continues to be the most important. And, though, it may have felt like a defeat, it was truly moving to see those who committed to attend despite it all. Reassuring that our efforts have not gone unseen, the need for a summit like this for Florida, and the additional dedication and support of our participants has not been missed. SO WE RISE. Join us for our RESCHEDULED One Florida: 1st Annual Environmental Justice Summit Oct 11-12th in Orlando, FL. Same place. Same time. Rebirthed with a new perspective. The Southeast won't give up. Florida won't give up. So WE won't give up either. Onward. A case study of transformation in a complex system The Wolves of Yellowstone National Park... Wolves had been absent from Yellowstone for 70 years, leading to a huge increase in deer throughout the park. ?? In 1995 a handful Wolves were reintroduced ?? which (as expected) shrank the deer population. However, less deer meant more vegetation in the low valleys ??, which created habitats for river animals. ?? More trees also stabilized the banks of rivers and stopped them collapsing, leading to the paths of the rivers actually changing, ?? as an unexpected ripple effect of the wolves arriving. Small fixes we try to make in complex organizations reverberate in unusual ways. When I get asked for a "plan" for the transformation of an organization by my clients, I tell them the wolf story ?? as a reminder that we can't possibly predict the exact sequence of work to be done. Instead we must use compasses, instead of maps. On small experimentation, instead of big bang change. And on learning, instead of control. #business #leadership #transformation

Our hearts continue to go out to everyone impacted by Hurricane Helene, the fourth Gulf Coast hurricane to make landfall this year. As the effects of this climate-fueled superstorm continue to unfold, we’re also bracing for Hurricane Milton, now tracking toward Florida’s western “Suncoast.” The frequency and intensity of these extreme weather events serve as a stark reminder of the shifting climate patterns we’ve been warned about for decades. While no climate-smart agriculture practices can prevent such damage, they do enhance resilience and help mitigate losses. For the past 15 years, Solutions from the Land has been dedicated to advocating for climate-smart agricultural practices at every level. This week, we are proud to participate in Florida Climate Week – a collaborative effort led by VoLo Foundation that unites leaders, experts, and citizens to address the pressing challenges of climate change in one of the world’s most vulnerable regions. We’re honored to contribute to this important dialogue, focusing on Florida Climate Smart Agriculture’s Healthy Farms- Healthy Bays initiative. Meridian Urban, along with Graeme Milligan, has been pleased to assist Narrandera Shire Council, Leeton Shire Council, Griffith City Council and Murrumbidgee Council with the preparation of the Western Riverina Regional Drought Resilience Plan. The plan provides the blueprint for how community, business, industry networks and local government can adapt to changing conditions and strengthen drought resilience into the future. As a premier food bowl in Australia, the Western Riverina is a region that is driven by a shared desire to continue to provide national-scale primary production activity in the face of different forms of water uncertainty. This RDRP provides an action plan around key pathways to guide effort and investment before, during and after drought. The Western Riverina RDRP is currently on public exhibition until early December and can be accessed at https://lnkd.in/g-HNpeW5 This work is jointly funded by the NSW Government and Commonwealth Government as part of the Future Drought Fund.

I appreciate those who have chosen to participate and actively contribute (as opposed to simply spectating and commenting only) to a better future for ourselves, our children and the wider country and region. At Fed Up Caribbean, we will be playing a role to contribute towards improving national (then regional) food resiliency and security through our three platforms: 1. Learning and Knowledge through Social Media and F2F Engagement 2. Our Fed Up Caribbean App (launching this month!) 3. B2B engagement This is part of the transition to a more Circular Caribbean that balances economics with society and the environment, given that all three are essentially one system. Yes, this type of activity is not popular with the status quo, but I believe that it is worth the effort. Enough talking, let's just do it....together. #circulareconomy #foodsecurity #sustainabledevelopment The Circular Caribbean Daphne Ewing-Chow Marla Dukharan Sherwyn Millette PhD. Marla Dukharan isn’t one to shy away from hard truths. Widely regarded as the Caribbean’s leading economist, she has built a reputation for her sharp, no-nonsense assessments of the region’s most complex challenges. She sits down with me to discuss the region’s increasingly severe hurricanes and Caribbean food insecurity, but quickly steers the conversation toward a broader and far more uncomfortable subject. “Colonization and all its effects are alive and well in the Caribbean,” she says. >>> Thank you Marla for sharing your valuable insights with me, and for all that you do for the Caribbean region. ?????
