At B Lab, we create standards, policies, tools, and programs to transform capitalism for the benefit of all people, communities, and the planet. A key part of our mission is shifting the behavior of business. By adopting new governance models and improving social and environmental performance in line with our standards, businesses not only make a positive difference but also set powerful examples for others, paving the way for broader change. But we don’t stop there: across our network, B Lab runs local and regional programs to equip leaders with practical tools for continuous improvement. A standout initiative is the Impact Improvement Program led by B Lab US & Canada in 2023. This eight-week program, facilitated by DEI mindset coaches from Beyond Inclusion Group, helps B Corps explore racial equity practices and policies. Participants committed 3 ? hours each week to learn about employee wealth-building, fair-chance hiring, inclusive recruitment and retention, and setting goals for accountability. The program continues with a new cohort in 2024! ??? Watch the video by B Lab US & Canada showcasing the remarkable activities of their Racial Equity team in 2023: https://bit.ly/3LbvJv6 ?? Last week, I had the honor of co-leading a breakout session at Race Forward's Facing Race conference in St. Louis, joined by Purpose Built Network members Rahkiah B. (South City Foundation) and Chauniqua Major (Lift Orlando). It was also a privilege to introduce Where We Thrive, a narrative project Purpose Built created with the FrameWorks Institute, to a new audience. https://bit.ly/4i6EN3F Affirming people and place through a racial equity lens is more critical than ever. Over these last few years of building a narrative culture within Purpose Built and across our Network, I’ve grown to recognize narrative as much more than a story we tell. Narrative isn’t just how we talk about our work—it’s a powerful strategy for shifting power and building relationships within communities, between residents, organizations, donors, and funders, even strengthening the relationship that exists between the past and the present. Narrative has become an important tool we use to elevate residents’ voices and advocate for their agency in shaping their neighborhoods through their own vision and experiences. Given the ongoing threats to language, learning, justice, and PEOPLE, it is easy to feel despair right now (and I feel that too, often!), but! the Race Forward conference was comforting as it was timely because I am not alone in this work and neither are you. We exist in a community with more than 4000 people who came to St. Louis, not including the countless others who weren’t in attendance but show up every day in their own neighborhoods and organizations to protect our rights, fight for truth, and imagine a better, more inclusive future for all. Our collective efforts make sure that vision will one day soon be our shared reality.?

Love the theme for August CreativeMornings, "What rituals do you practice in your relationships, your spirituality, and your creative work? How do they heighten your sense of purpose and belonging in this world?" At discoverU, we encourage you to find one or two rituals [(journal writing or walking; start simple :)] that you can make yours and grow with it to prioritise yourself. Resources : Reflection.app for Journal writing CreativeMornings for creative motivations
August’s global theme is RITUAL. It was chosen by our Charlottesville chapter in Virginia and illustrated by Matt Smithson. https://buff.ly/3WlQ9Xk Share your thoughts with intention using this month’s hashtag: #CMritual CreativeMornings/Charlottesville

Last weekend, I had the privilege of attending a conference in Estonia, where we spoke extensively about the intersection of community, advocacy, and art. The phenomenal conference solidified my belief in the power of intertwining art in the points we are trying to make and the stories we are trying to tell. Art, in its diverse forms – visual, literary, or auditory – acts as a universal language that bridges the gap between diverse perspectives and experiences. While on LinkedIn, we often categorize our interactions through a strict professional lens of boss/employee or customer/provider, there is a lot of potential when we view our shared humanity and perspective through the prism of art. Imagine a world where art is not just an afterthought but a pivotal element in shaping our professional narratives and strategies. This approach doesn't just add depth to our work; it fosters a culture of empathy, innovation, and connectedness. The idea might seem out there for LinkedIn, but if you look at people like Dr. Joy Buolamwini, who captured global attention through her poem on misgendering AIs, or organizations like Information is Beautiful that takes something as nerdy as billions of data points and turns it into art that tells a story, you can see it really does work.
Turning research into tangible impact is at the heart of our mission at the Algorithmic Justice League, as highlighted by Dr. Joy Buolamwini's words at her recent keynote speech at SXSW 2024. From advocacy that voices the concerns of the underrepresented to art that captivates and educates, our efforts are designed to bridge the gap between academic research and real-world applications. Something to be proud of: debut of Meute Agency BXL's work in Politico’s Brussels Playbook! Where research done with FNF Human Rights Hub in Geneva about Gen Z and human rights was featured. The?Gen Z survey?provides critical insights into how young people view democracy and human rights: 88% believe human rights should apply to everyone? Yet,?only 62% think democracy is the best way to govern? And just?40% feel their own democratic systems are performing well This mix of commitment to human rights and skepticism toward democracy highlights a clear challenge: building systems that inspire trust and engagement among younger generations. A great result of FNF's team Michaela LissowskyJules Maaten @marinaelKhoury Patrick Reiland Thanks Friedrich Naumann Foundation for the collaboration in leading this important discussion.
