Louise sums up perfectly what I have been been feeling all day. This report must be a gamechanger. Governments must stop dismissing safety regulation as ‘red tape’, councils must start rebuilding the inhouse skills and capacity to properly hold the construction sector to account and understand what they are buying, and stop outsourcing their responsibilities to and their relationships with their tenants. We are looking to this new government to respond with appropriate anger, resolve, and change but its not just on them - we must all do better and we must never forget #Grenfell.
The 72 second silence at the end of the BBC Radio 4 Today programme was incredibly poignant. Hearing the stories again of those who escaped the fire, and those who didn’t, never loses its impact. Those chilling accounts give us all every reason we could ever need to always challenge, always go above and beyond, always ask the difficult questions, always prioritise the people we serve. We owe it to them to carefully consider today’s final inquiry report, and keep #Grenfell in our minds as well as in our hearts forever.

Grenfell: Building a Disaster is on Radio 4 this week and next. The 10 part series brings together everything I've learnt watching and reporting on the inquiry since 2018. Each episode is only 15 minutes, so if you have a moment to hear about the missed opportunities & unheeded warnings which led to a fire which killed 72 people, please give it a listen https://lnkd.in/efytNH7R

As a journalist or publisher, I believe you have a fundamental responsibility to your interviewees (and audience) to allow their stories to be honestly reflected in your coverage. Gary O'Donoghue is a master of his craft. This vignette of his reporting in the hours after the attempted assassination of Trump earlier this month is a great insight into his approach. Listening actively and respectfully while resisting the urge to enforce your narrative should be a non-negotiable when out in the field. 99% of the content we consume these days doesn't adhere to any of the principles or techniques that great reporting is characterised by. Let's treasure the skilled, unbiased journalists that we still have and learn from them. We need more of this than ever to cut through the noise. #journalism #reportage #publishing #media #news

This is the BBC's Gary O'Donoghue talking to The Media Show on BBC Radio 4 about his interview with Greg Smith, who described to Gary what he'd seen in the moments before the attempted assassination of Donald Trump. It's a remarkable account.

??Part two of the story of the BBC. The Second World War is over, radio is booming and television is back. The BBC is stronger than ever, with new talent, new formats and new opportunities. But there are new challenges too: stormy waters over the Suez crisis and a brash new competitor in the form of ITV. Under director general Hugh Carleton Greene, the BBC plugs into the revolutionary energy of the 1960s: Radio 1, Doctor Who, Cathy Come Home, That Was the Week That Was. Meanwhile, David Attenborough’s highbrow upstart BBC2 introduces the nation to colour TV and landmark documentaries. The 70s and 80s are a golden age for ratings, from Morecambe and Wise to Live Aid to EastEnders. Yet there’s also a looming existential crisis thanks to Margaret Thatcher, who loathes the corporation as the embodiment of the bloated state and centre-left groupthink. After the defenestration of DG Alasdair Milne, John Birt gives the BBC a Thatcherite makeover that fends off the Tory assault, but at what cost? In the 21st century, the BBC has lived under the shadow of scandals, cuts and relentless salvos from the right — every blunder, from the Iraq War to Jimmy Savile, becomes another cudgel for its enemies to beat it with. Too successful and it’s accused of stifling competition. Not successful enough and it’s not worth the license fee. The crisis never ends. Yet more than nine in ten of us use it every week and would be devastated to lose it. How has the BBC lived up to the Reithian imperative to inform, educate and entertain, and why did Reith himself end up hating it? How can an organisation so powerful be so vulnerable? Is its unruly pluralism a blessing or a curse? Is it really politically biased — and if so, in which direction? And who did Mary Whitehouse personally blame for Britain’s “moral collapse”? Tune in. https://lnkd.in/dMb_QaKX

So interesting to hear Emily Verity of 1GC Family Law on Radio 4 earlier, talking about the extension of the open reporting provisions which now apply in all family courts in England and Wales. This means that from Monday 27 January 2025 journalists and legal bloggers are able to report on what they see and hear whilst attending any family court, if a transparency order is granted (to protect the anonymity of the parties and their children). The extension will follow stepped arrangements, as in the pilot scheme. This will have a huge impact on families at a very stressful time and will also affect those professionals, solicitors, counsel and experts who are involved in each case. Clients will need our support and guidance more than ever as we prepare them for Court hearings…..A watershed moment in family law.
Emily Verity will be joining The Media Show live today on BBC Radio 4, from 4-5pm. She will be contributing to a discussion on Transparency in the Family Courts. The show, hosted by Ros Atkins and Katie Razzall, will also feature journalist Hannah Summers who will offer the reporters’ perspective on the issue. The show is also visualised for the BBC News channel, with a 30-minute edited version broadcasted there. ? You can access the live broadcast here:? https://lnkd.in/dJYYXNB ?
